350.org Founder and Environmentalist Bill McKibben Endorses Tom Perriello for Virginia Governor

McKibben Praises Perriello’s Commitment to Stand Up to Fossil Fuel Development and Utilities That Lock Virginia into Outdated Thinking on Energy

Today, prominent environmental activist and founder of 350.org Bill McKibben is endorsing Tom Perriello in his Democratic primary campaign for governor of Virginia. McKibben praises Tom for rejecting campaign contributions from the state’s largest publicly-regulated utility corporation, Dominion, and pressing for bold change on renewable and clean energy.

“Tom Perriello, for the first time in Virginia’s political history, has stood up to Dominion Energy,” said Bill McKibben. “That’s a smart move – what the politically-connected utility wants to do is lock the Commonwealth into a future of pipelines and power plants, even as the energy landscape is changing fast in the direction of renewables. This kind of foresight bodes well for his chances to lead Virginia on many other fronts as governor.”

In his campaign, Tom has clearly opposed two proposed fracked-gas pipelines in Virginia – the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and the Mountain Valley Pipeline – and called for a dramatic shift to clean, renewable energy. He has also rejected campaign contributions from Dominion, the largest contributor to either political party in Virginia, and challenged the corporation to win him over with the quality of their ideas, not the size of their political donations. He has also said he would stand up to the Trump administration’s disastrous energy agenda that threatens Virginia’s coastlines, the Chesapeake Bay, and clean air and water across the Commonwealth.

“We stand at a defining moment in Virginia, where we can double down on rusty old ideas like fossil fuel pipelines and monopolies or embrace the next generation of jobs in clean energy and distributive power,” said Tom Perriello. “Our agenda gives Virginians a real choice of better jobs while saving our vulnerable coastline and protecting clean air and water against attacks by Donald Trump and Republicans in Washington and Richmond. As Bill knows, climate change is an existential threat for Virginia and our planet, and as governor, I’ll work hand-in-hand with advocates and experts to put our Commonwealth at the front of clean energy development in America.”

Bill McKibben is a tireless leader fighting climate change. Good enough for me.

  • From Rep. Donald McEachin’s office:

Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) issued the following statement in response to reports that President Trump is expected to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement to combat climate change and limit the rise in global temperatures:

“Withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement is reckless, irresponsible, and yet another rejection of scientific truths. While other countries are already transitioning to a clean energy economy, we must do the same. Rejecting this global climate effort will jeopardize our security, our health, our environment, and our strategic partnerships around the globe. Sustaining our Earth for future generations depends on international agreements to reduce our carbon footprint – the United States has been and should be a world leader in this effort, not an obstructionist.

“We have a moral obligation to our children and our children’s children to leave behind a healthy, sustainable planet. The Paris Agreement is an essential step in that direction. We need to limit the increase in global temperatures and combat sea level rise by promoting renewable energies and supporting innovative efforts that produce green jobs. President Trump has promised to create jobs and put people back to work. This abrogation of our participation does just the opposite.

“In light of these reports, I call on President Trump to reconsider this decision and, instead to work with our allies to address climate change, strengthen relationships, and build a new green economy.”

  • Yet another environmental group endorses Tom Perriello for Governor:

Friends of the Earth Action Endorses Tom Perriello for Virginia Governor

Friends of the Earth Action today endorsed Tom Perriello (D-Va.) to be the Democratic nominee for Virginia governor in the June 13 Democratic primary election.

“Tom Perriello is with us in the trenches fighting fracking pipelines and uranium mines and challenging the power of Dominion Energy,” said Erich Pica, President of Friends of the Earth Action. “Perriello’s commitment to progressive environmental, economic policies and social justice make him the best candidate to lead the Commonwealth of Virginia forward.”

“With Donald Trump in the White House Virginia needs a governor who will lead the resistance,” said Pica. “Rep. Perriello’s progressive vision makes him the best candidate to defend Virginia’s environment from Donald Trump and fossil fuel companies.”

A former member of Congress, Perriello has demonstrated his strong commitment to protecting Virginia’s environment, creating clean energy jobs, and standing up to President Trump’s anti-environmental agenda on the campaign trail. His campaign has refused donations from state-regulated energy monopolies Dominion and Appalachian Power, and he has pledged to halt the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley gas pipeline projects if elected.

“I am honored to have the support of Friends of the Earth Action, a leading grassroots force for environmental and progressive change. Virginia faces a defining moment, where we settle for aging ideas like fossil fuel pipelines and monopolies or embrace the next generation of jobs in clean energy and distributive power,” said Tom Perriello. “Our agenda lets Virginians choose better jobs, saving our vulnerable coastline and protecting our air and water against attacks by Donald Trump and Republicans in Washington and Richmond. Climate change is an existential threat for Virginia and our planet, and as governor, I’ll work hand-in-hand with advocates and experts to put our Commonwealth at the forefront of clean energy development.”

Born and raised in Charlottesville, Va., Perriello has worked on environmental, social, and racial justice issues throughout his career. He was elected to represent Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District in 2008 and supported clean energy investments, limits on carbon emissions, and the Affordable Care Act while in Congress.
