How can you tell if Bob McDonnell’s lying? As the saying goes, “when his lips are moving.” In this case, McDonnell claims that President Obama’s policies have been for more taxation and more unionization. In that place many of us know and love as “the real world,” of course, President Obama has cut taxes over and over again, at the urging of Republicans and conservadems. For more on that, see here and here and here and…well, you get the idea. This administration has cut taxes and cut taxes and cut them some more, to the point that taxes in 2009 hit the lowest level since 1950, when Harry Truman was president. In sum, Bob McDonnell’s statement about “more taxes” is the EXACT OPPOSITE of the truth — aka, a “Big Lie.”
As for McDonnell’s claim of “more unionization,” the fact is that union membership has been steadily declining. According to numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Union membership in the United States continued to decline in 2010,” with the union membership rate hitting 11.9%, down from 20.1% in 1983. Again, Bob McDonnell’s statement is the EXACT OPPOSITE of the truth — aka, another “Big Lie.”
