If you missed tonight’s GOP debate, you missed Mitt Romney’s instant classic response to Rick Perry’s charge that contractors working for Romney had employed undocumented immigrants. Romney said he told the contractors, “You can’t have any illegals working on our property. I’m running for office, for pete’s sake, we can’t have illegals.”
Michael Kinsley famously said a gaffe is when a politician tells the truth. Here, Romney’s gaffe reveals the truth that Republicans are happy to take advantage of the cheap labor provided by undocumented immigrants … until it’s time to run for office.
