“Today Virginia retreated from sensible gun control policy in repealing a 19-year law to limit handgun purchases to one gun a month.

“The repeal of this law will return Virginia to being the nation’s number one gun-running state, putting more guns into the hands of criminals and traffickers.

“Limiting handgun purchases to one every month – twelve guns a year – is not an unreasonable limitation. Two thirds of Virginians support the one-handgun per month restriction.

“Every day, 87 people die from gun violence. Almost five years ago, 32 students were killed at the massacre on Virginia Tech’s campus here in the Commonwealth. And just this week, another school shooting occurred, this time in Ohio, where three teens were gunned down by their classmate. This senseless violence will only continue unabated unless there’s a political price to pay for such reckless legislating.”

Virginia’s One‐Handgun‐a‐Month law was enacted in 1993 with the support of now-Governor Bob McDonnell, Governor L. Douglas Wilder, U.S. Attorney General for the Eastern District of Virginia Richard Cullen, the Virginia Bar Association, the Virginia Association of Commonwealth’s Attorneys, the Virginia State Police, the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, the Virginia Fraternal Order of Police and the Virginia Sheriff’s Association.
