Video: Eric Holder Says Voter ID Laws are Essentially “Poll Taxes”

Go to 15:30 of this video, where Attorney General Eric Holder says that voter ID laws in places like Texas would be “harmful to minority voters.” In Texas, for instance, “concealed handgun licenses would be acceptable forms of photo ID, but student IDs would not.” Crazy, huh? Even worse, “many of those without IDs would have to travel great distances to get them, and some would struggle to pay for the documents they might need to obtain them.” According to Attorney General Holder, “we call those poll taxes,” and he’s absolutely right. Remember that there have been essentially zero cases of true “voter fraud” in this country, despite Faux “News,” Rush, and Teapublicans screaming that there is. As usual, just as with their claims that Barack Obama wasn’t born in the United States, or that he’s a “socialist,” or whatever other insanity they’re spewing out, this whole “voter fraud” thing is just a flat-out lie. There isn’t any. End of story.

So what else would Teapublicans’ motivation be? Very simple: they want to suppress the votes of those most likely to  be Democrats, and also those most vulnerable to “poll taxes” and other relics from the Jim Crow era. Make no mistake, this is the very core of our democracy under direct assault by Republicans. Also make no mistake, if we don’t act to stop them, they could get away with it.
