I don’t know about you, but I’d love to see a lot more Democratic Congressional candidates having the cojones to call out the utterly heinous corporate tool Grover Norquist with the kind of blunt, forceful language that 5th CD Democratic candidate John Douglass uses here (check out the audio, and see after the flip for a transcript; also note that the comments came on August 1, at the Senior Statesmen of Virginia candidate forum held in Charlottesville). I mean, who on earth could disagree with the concept that Americans should pledge their loyalty to the Constitution, not to the big corporations and their flacks, Grover Norquist being Exhibit A?!?
Well, believe it or not, there’s at least one person out there – a particularly noxious right-wing shock jock/Rush Limbaugh wannabe springs to mind – who apparently disagrees with the concept that we should pledge our loyalty to the Constitution, not to Grover Norquist.
For my part, in stark contrast, I say good for John Douglass for getting his values and priorities straight. If you agree with Douglass, not with the Limbaugh wannabe, I encourage you to help Douglass out however you can. Thanks.
Well first, I’m gonna to ask everybody in this audience, you know, who the hell is Grover Norquist?...[I]sn’t that amazing that some right-wing jerk like him can…threaten the very security of this country by going around and…how gullible are these politicians that would sign up to some jerky Washington guy’s phony-baloney pledge? You don’t make pledges to guys like him. You know, your pledge is to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America and the people that it stands for. And that’s what our members of Congress should be doing…these guys have gotten us in — and some women, too — have gotten us into these wars that they didn’t pay for, okay, and run up the deficit…they’ve kicked the can down the stream, kicked the can down the stream, under this Grover Norquist, uh, pledge. And you know, these Republicans, they’re scared to death to call Grover Norquist names, you know. But hey, Grover, you wanna record this? I don’t give a damn…what you think about me…you know he’s gonna be against me either way…And I just think a pledge to someone like Grover Norquist is obscene, and you’ll never catch me doing that.
By the way, to critics of Gen. Douglass who say his language was too harsh on poor ol’ Grover, guess who else said almost the same exact thing? That’s right, former President George H.W. Bush. LOL
