Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Friday, March 25. Also check out the NewsHour’s interview last night with former Rep. Barney Frank (co-author of Dodd-Frank), who disagrees (to put it mildly) with Bernie Sanders on “too big to fail,” Glass-Steagall, etc. Finally, RIP to Earl Hamner, creator of “The Waltons,” who died at age 92. We need more shows like that one, particularly in this nasty time of Trump.
- Trump’s insult of Cruz’s wife adds to GOP fears on women (Seriously, how can any woman in her right mind support Trump? Or anyone, really?)
- The anti-Muslim rhetoric of Trump and Cruz only helps terrorists (There’s no upside to it whatsoever, except politically for those guys in pandering to their bigoted, ignorant base.)
- Donald Trump’s shocking ignorance, laid bare (“Donald Trump knows next to nothing about the issues that presidents must face.”)
- Editorial: Trump is bringing out the worst in America (By far the worst presidential campaign of my lifetime…never thought I’d see this hatred, ignorance, insanity and utter trash in America.)
- Biden: ‘There is no Biden rule’ on Supreme Court nominations (Republicans’ b.s. reasons for not doing their jobs have been all over the place, utterly inconsistent and utterly nonsensical.)
- Paul Krugman: Crazy About Money (“The moral here is that we shouldn’t be surprised by the Republican establishment’s willingness to rally behind Mr. Cruz. Yes, Mr. Cruz portrays himself as an outsider, and has managed to make remarkably many personal enemies. But while his policy ideas are extreme, they reflect the same extremism that pervades the party’s elite. There are no moderates, or for that matter, sensible people, anywhere in this story.”)
- North Carolina’s repugnant new anti-LGBT law is only the tip of the iceberg (“An odious new movement to demonize and dehumanize queer people is afoot in statehouses across the country”)
- GOP’s Supreme Court blowback: The Republicans’ case for obstruction is bad and getting worse
- Stop Freaking Out About How Much Protein You’re Getting (“You’re probably eating too much, and it’s ruining the planet.” I’ve never understood the advertising about getting more protein; do people actually believe this pseudo-scientific crap???)
- “Morning Joe” childishness: The show’s inane demand that President Obama treat Americans like children (Why does anyone watch this wank-fest?)
- God bless John Kasich: The Ohio governor has turned into quite a gift to the Democrats (“Kasich defies calls to quit — and the longer he stays in, the more likely it is Trump will be the GOP’s nominee” Although I remain convinced that Ted Cruz would be just as unelectable as Trump.)
- Trump’s Attack on Heidi Cruz Is the Scummy Low of a Scummy Campaign (“And that’s saying a lot”)
- Gov. McAuliffe Pleased with 2016 General Assembly Session (I knew he’d say that, but it’s just laughable. The fact is, pretty much every single pro-clean-energy, pro-environment, and progressive piece of legislation was killed by Republicans, while lots of bad bills advanced. Also, no Medicaid expansion. Combine all that, plus what Republicans did with Judge Roush, and it wasn’t just a bad session, it was borderline disastrous.)
- U.S. OKs offshore wind research facility off Virginia’s coast (There’s enough offshore wind potential to power the entire state, just need to start scaling it. What are we waiting for???)
- Earl Hamner, creator of ‘The Waltons’, dies at 92 (“The nostalgic television show about a Depression-era family brought national attention to Central Virginia and the Blue Ridge Mountains.”)
- Scott calls for Medicaid expansion on ACA anniversary (“About 400,000 Virginians still don’t have health care coverage, six years after the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was signed into law.” Disgraceful and unacceptable.)
- Editorial: Debates regarding car sales shift into high gear (“Legislation can slow the pace of change, but in the end consumers generally get their way.” Yep.)
- McAuliffe vetoes two gun bills
- More names raised in race for Richmond mayor’s seat (One person I most definitely will NOT be supporting for this, or any other, job is former Del. Joe Morrissey.)
- Democrat Bedell files to run for Congress in 7th District
- Forbes renting Virginia Beach apartment but keeping Chesapeake residency (What a joke. So who are Dems going to run against this clown?)
- Our view: Why can’t we all just get along? (Yeah, compartmentalization is great…except when it isn’t, which is very often.)
- Appalachian counties hit by coal layoffs losing population
- Proposed Chesapeake budget includes raises, more school funding
- Morning showers kick off another warm day; A pleasant Easter weekend ahead
