Tuesday News: Melania Trump Plagiarizes Michelle Obama; Cooch Throws a S***-Fit; Actually, America’s Safer Than Ever

by Lowell

Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Tuesday, July 19.

  • Video: Rachel Maddow show analyzes Melania Trump’s plagiarized speech, “This turns this night into a catastrophe.”

  • Top 5 quotes from Andrew Sullivan about RNC Day #1. For lots more, see here. And yes, Sullivan was spot-on last night…really nailed it.

“The degeneracy of conservatism – its descent into literally mindless appeals to tribalism and fear and hatred – was on full display. You might also say the same about the religious right, the members of whom have eagerly embraced a racist, a nativist, a believer in war crimes, and a lover of the tyrants that conservatism once defined itself against. Their movement long lost any claim to a serious Christian conscience. But that they would so readily embrace such an unreconstructed pagan is indeed a revelation.”

“If you think of the conservative movement as beginning in 1964 and climaxing in the 1990s, then the era we are now in is suffering from a cancer of the mind and the soul. That the GOP has finally found a creature that can personify these urges to purge, a man for whom the word “shameless” could have been invented, a bully and a creep, a liar and cheat, a con man and wannabe tyrant, a dedicated loather of individual liberty, and an opponent of the pricelessly important conventions of liberal democracy is perhaps a fitting end.”

“Melania disagrees with her husband in believing his opponents deserve respect.”

” There’s nothing this crowd loves more than calling for Hillary Clinton to be in jail. It’s worth noting that this is not normal politics. This is stab-in-the-back neo-fascist rhetoric. Obama refused to prosecute or even threaten to prosecute officials guilty of brutal war crimes – so as not to criminalize politics. This parody of a political party wants to jail their political opponent for extremely careless storage of emails.”

“The exploitation of that woman’s emotions is, yes, another new low. But I suspect we are going to have an orgy of this kind of gut, primary feeling this week, and trying to counter it rationally is close to impossible. That’s how deliberative democracy is dismantled, bit by bit, feeling by feeling. Yes, it’s preaching to a very small choir, but Trump has no rational, calm side. He is pure id. So it is completely appropriate and predictable that his convention will simply channel the crudest, strongest emotions – fear, patriotism, family, tribe. These are the key themes of the authoritarian soul. And he’s just getting started.”

  • Chris Cillizza at his mindless, vapid worst in his “Winners and Losers List” from Day # of convention. All style, no substance, also no actual journalism, looking into things like the fact that Melania Trump’s speech was partially plagiarized, that almost everything the speakers said was an outright lie and/or slander, that this is NOT a normal political convention, etc, etc. That’s what they pay Cillizza the big bucks for (also to get things wildly wrong for months on end, as he did with the GOP nominating process throughout 2015 and well into 2016).

  • NY Daily News cover speaks for itself (without plagiarizing anyone – heh)

  • Video: Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart Make Sense of the Trump Candidacy

  • EW Jackson claims Michelle Obama didn’t mean what she said, but Melania Trump did. WTF???

  • Video: Corey Lewandowski: Paul Manafort Should Resign If He Approved Melania Trump’s Speech

  • Audio: EW Jackson says Melania Trump did NOT plagiarize Michelle Obama’s speech, it’s “utterly preposterous,” the “mainstream media…is so biased,” just looking for way of “slandering” and “vilifying” conservatives. Also claims that “if Michelle Obama said anything similar…Michelle Obama didn’t mean it and Melania Trump did.”

  • Quizzical

I actually turned the Repub Convention off because of Melania’s plagiarized lines. Not because I knew they were plagiarized, but because I didn’t need the third wife of a billionaire to tell me about how you have to work hard in America.

I also felt manipulated because there was a big buildup about Trump speaking on day one only to have him say two sentences to introduce his wife.

  • Video: Hillary Clinton says she loves the fact that Kaine’s “boring” – “he’s never lost an election, he was a world-class mayor, governor and Senator.”

  • From the Fairfax County Public Schools:

School Board Cancels Transgender Regulation Work Session; Regulation Placed On Hold

Following an extensive closed session yesterday, the Fairfax County School Board directed staff to temporarily suspend implementation of the proposed regulation regarding gender non-conforming and transgender students. As a result, the Board canceled its discussion of the regulation scheduled as part of the work session on Thursday, July 21, 2016.

In May 2015, the School Board voted to extend the FCPS non-discrimination policy (Policy 1450) to include gender identity. The purpose of the regulation is to establish procedures and guidelines for schools to support gender non-conforming and transgender students that are in-line with the policy and legal requirements.

The Board determined it needs additional time to evaluate the legal issues surrounding the regulation, including a case now pending before the Supreme Court on this topic from a Virginia school district.

“While the regulation is temporarily on hold, Policy 1450 remains in effect, and the Board remains committed to this policy of nondiscrimination,” said School Board Chair Sandy Evans. “Consistent with the policy, and current practice, FCPS continues to accommodate the needs of transgender and gender non-conforming students in a way that protects the dignity and privacy of all students.”

The School Board is continuing to closely evaluate and monitor the legal implications, as well as the community’s questions through the start of the 2016-17 school year. Prior to any implementation, or formal adoption of the regulation, the Board will provide additional information and further opportunity for public comment on this important topic.

  • Veep

Notwithstanding that most va dems are strong Tim K backers in Hillary’s veepstakes
But isn’t it at least a little surprising that no reporters have dug into Vilsack’s record at the Agriculture Dept ??
We hear from civil servants at Ag that he is considered the worst Ag sec in generations…

    • What specifically happened (or didn’t happen) at Ag? I really haven’t focused on Vilsack at all. Thanks.

      • Actually, just checked Wikipedia, and I suppose there’s some stuff in there that’s not super flattering (e.g., the Shirley Sherrod fiasco, his supposed “preference for large industrial farms and genetically modified crops” and this comment (“agriculture tends to take the brunt of criticism about climate change, but the industry contributes only 9 percent of the greenhouse gases blamed for a warming planet” and that while there were “challenges globally in terms of agriculture and its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions that’s not necessarily the case in the United States.”).

  • Video: Virginia Republicans announce their votes with Assad-supporting extremist Sen. Dick Black looking on…

    • True Blue

I’m disinterested in the RNC convention, but happened to see the roll call for VA. Seeing disgusting Dick Black’s mug nearly made me barf. He’s as much into photo-ops as Barbara Comstock.

I await an uplifting DNC convention next week, without the fear mongering, conspiracies, one-liners, bumper sticker sound-bites, shutting down the voices of delegates, and disorganization. Let this whack week be over soon with no bounce for Drumpf. None of the speakers is really focused on what he will do to make America great but they sure got marching orders to do some Hillary bashing. I do enjoy the MSNBC commentating!

On another note, I love the image of Melania looking over Michelle’s shoulder, copying her work, found far down in the comments section of this:

  • Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell boo’ed as he takes the stage at RNC
