Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Thursday, May 18.
- Exclusive: Trump campaign had at least 18 undisclosed contacts with Russians – sources
- Special counsel appointed to oversee inquiry of Russia, Trump (“Justice Dept. picks former prosecutor and FBI director Robert Mueller to lead investigation”)
- House Majority Leader McCarthy told colleagues in 2016: ‘I think Putin pays’ Trump (“Kevin McCarthy made the politically explosive assertion in a private conversation on Capitol Hill in June 2016 with his fellow GOP leaders. House Speaker Paul D. Ryan interjected and stopped the conversation from exploring McCarthy’s assertion, saying: ‘No leaks. … This is how we know we’re a real family here.'” Yep, Paul Ryan is evil.)
- Infamous Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke may join the Trump administration (“He hates Black Lives Matter, once called a black CNN commentator ‘jigaboo,’ and allegedly let multiple people, including a baby, die in his jail.” Clarke should be in jail himself.)
- A scandal-plagued White House is unraveling Republican unity in Congress (Sad!)
- Paul Ryan Keeps It All in the Family (Have I mentioned recently how evil Lyin’ Ryan is? Oh yes, I have.)
- Kristof: Dangerous Times for Trump and the Nation
- The Special Counsel America Needs
- Trump Team Knew Flynn Was Under Investigation Before He Came to White House
- Some Republicans nervously begin stepping away from the president (These people are pathetic cowards.)
- There’s a Reason Authoritarians Beat Up Protesters in Our Nation’s Capital (“Something’s changed.” Gee, what could that “something” be?)
- Can Trump Screw Up the World’s Best Intelligence Relationship? (“Israel is the United States’ eyes and ears in the Middle East. Its secrets need to be secure in Washington.”)
- Trump has caused a catastrophe. Let’s end it quickly. (“Delaying the process of getting to the truth will harm our country far more than any political backlash by Trump’s supporters.”)
- Rod Rosenstein saves the Republican Party from itself
- Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, a founding father of grunge, dead at 52
- Trump’s commission on voter fraud is, well, fraudulent (The point of it is to figure out ways to SUPPRESS voting rights. It is heinous, unAmerican, etc.)
- Warner: Comey should testify
- Kaine: Trump ‘very, very close’ to obstructing justice
- Cool your jets, liberals: The impeachment of Donald Trump is a great idea that is totally not happening (“Trump’s meeting with Russian officials would be more than enough evidence — if the GOP weren’t so slavishly loyal”)
- Two big reasons Trump will have a tough time pushing the special counsel around (“Things just got real.”)
- Conservatives begin to whisper: President Pence (The problem is, Pence is a theocratic, far-right nutjob.)
- Trump’s Worst Nightmare Comes True (“President Trump fired James Comey. He got his mentor, Robert Mueller instead—and years of trouble.”)
- Is the end of Donald Trump’s presidency drawing nearer? Either way he will have done great harm to America (I blame the people who voted for him of course, but I also blame the media and particularly Fox, right-wing radio,
etc.) - Hannity and Fox News are in full meltdown over Trump’s Comey scandal
- Does it even matter who Democrats nominate to run for Virginia governor? (“My apologies in advance to fellow Democrats who have read this and feel like they’ve been punched in the kidneys, but yeah, this is an 8- to 10-year process that we’re in right now, no matter who you vote for in next month’s primary.”)
- Race between Democrats running for Virginia governor is neck-and-neck
- Northam leading TV spending; Republicans spending little (“Spokesmen for both campaigns said Wednesday that their media tracking showed Northam had spent $1.2 million while Perriello has spent more than $500,000.” As always, I’m not a big fan of broadcast TV advertising.)
- Tom Garrett sounds off on Trump’s next move; Bob Goodlatte declines to comment
- Editorial: Gov. Terry McAuliffe takes action on climate change (Yep, I’m all for a carbon tax, but good luck getting the General ASSembly to pass it.)
- McAuliffe Promotes New Law to Maintain Historic Black Graves
- Perriello fields wide range of questions in York County Democratic candidate forum
- Board of Corrections heightens scrutiny of Virginia jails, but death investigations have not yet begun
- Virginia legislators scramble to protect state in federal health care debate

- Democrats opposing Del. Greg Habeeb to debate Friday
- A repeat of the heat today but a much cooler weekend awaits
