Wednesday News: Comey Firing “Trump’s Watergate Moment?”; “Moment of Truth” for GOP; U.S. Rule of Law “Into the Abyss?”

by Lowell

Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Wednesday, May 10.

  • Quizzical

Trump was floundering in foreign relations, until an A-team of advisers was put in place who could give him good advice and, for the most part, successfully manage him.

Now, it is clear that at minimum, that needs to happen for his domestic advisers too, as the entire handling of the Comey firing was a fiasco, to use a polite term – rushed, and details poorly handled or not handled at all.

The bottom line is that if the President isn’t listening to his staff and advisers, then the staff and advisers have to be changed out, and replaced by first rate people whom he will listen to. We can’t go on like this for another three and a half years.

  • From the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence:

Ralph Northam is Right Choice for Governor

Washington, DC (May 10, 2017) — The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence enthusiastically endorses Ralph Northam for Governor of Virginia. Northam has been a steadfast supporter of gun violence prevention and longtime ally of our organization.

As a state senator from a conservative rural district, Northam met with Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Virginia State Director Lori Haas and other families affected by the Virginia Tech shooting shortly following the 2007 tragedy. At that meeting, Northam committed to fight for stronger gun laws in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and his position has not wavered over the last decade.

When a universal background checks bill came before the Virginia Senate in 2009, Northam courageously voted in favor of the bill despite political pressure. He went on to win re-election in 2011 before being elected Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in 2013. During both campaigns, he ran and won on a strong gun violence prevention platform.

In his race for governor, Northam has continued his strong support for a safer Virginia. As a doctor, Northam has seen the dangerous effects of guns up close, and as an elected official he has used his position to fight for stronger gun laws. He has a proven record of standing up and speaking out on this vital issue while others have stayed silent. Ralph Northam views gun violence prevention as a moral obligation to his constituents — not just a political talking point. We are proud to support his campaign.

  • DFA Endorses Challengers in Key Virginia House Races

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed six progressive candidates challenging Republicans in the Virginia House of Delegates. DFA will be mobilizing its 37,065 members in the state through fundraising, organizing, and volunteering to support its endorsed candidates in the state.

Democracy for America Electoral Director Annie Weinberg on the endorsements:

“Ending the Republicans’ veto-proof majority in Virginia’s House of Delegates will not happen unless we invest in progressives who are willing to take on entrenched Republicans. With these candidates, we will be expanding the map and channeling the enormous grassroots resistance energy we are seeing in Virginia into building more progressive power in the State House. It is past time for the state’s political leadership in Richmond to reflect the strength, values, and diversity of its people.”

DFA endorsed the following six Democratic candidates running in Republican-held seats in Virginia House of Delegates:

    Sheila Bynum-Coleman (VA-62)
    Wendy Gooditis (VA-10)
    Chris Hurst (VA-12)
    Josh King (VA-02)
    David Reid (VA-32)
    Donte Tanner (VA-40)

These House of Delegates endorsements are an initial part of the group’s on-going “Purple to Blue” Project, a national multi-year effort to build power in state House and Senate chambers across the country, with a focus on making “purple” state legislative seats (like those in Virginia) decisively Democratic. As part of the program, DFA earlier this year endorsed eight incumbent progressives in the House of Delegates, as well as Justin Fairfax for Lieutenant Governor of the state. Since it’s launch, the program has mobilized its renowned network of small dollar donors and grassroots volunteers to elect state legislators in battleground states nationwide, with recent victories from Virginia to Arizona, Colorado, Maine, New Mexico, and more.

Democracy for America is a people-powered political action committee with 1 million members nationwide. Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 917 progressive candidates nationwide.
