Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Friday, June 2.
- Trump’s climate deal decision alarms leaders worldwide (It should alarm every sentient, thinking human being. Which of course rules out the likes of Morgan Griffith, Bob Goodlatte, Scott Taylor, etc.)
- Trump’s Paris climate decision shows the threat rising tribalism poses to the planet (“Cosmopolitanism must win the war, or we’re screwed.” The brilliant David Roberts absolutely nails it.)
- Even before Trump’s decision, the deal’s target would be hard to hit. Now it may be impossible. (“The climate agreement’s goal to limit warming to ‘well below’ a 2 degree Celsius rise above preindustrial temperatures may now be out of reach, scientists say.” This will have to be more than reversed by the next president, who CAN NOT be Trump or any other Republican.)
- Our Disgraceful Exit From the Paris Accord (“Trump clings to the same false narrative that congressional Republicans have been peddling for years and that Mr. Trump’s minions, like Mr. Pruitt at the E.P.A. and Ryan Zinke at the Interior Department, are peddling now”)
- Brooks: Trump Poisons the World (“By looking at nothing but immediate material interest, Trump, McMaster and Cohn turn America into a nation that affronts everybody else’s moral emotions. They make our country seem disgusting in the eyes of the world.”)
- Krugman: Trump Gratuitously Rejects the Paris Accord (“This isn’t about nationalism; mainly, it’s about sheer spite.”)
- Void in Leadership Opens Door to Global Upheaval
- Trump’s withdrawal from Paris is a major blow to the American-led global order (“It’s death by a thousand cuts — and I don’t know what cut we’re at.”)
- Explanation for Paris exit is based on spurious claims (“From looking at only one side of the argument to his suggestion that the deal treated the United States unfairly, President Trump made plenty of fishy claims about the Paris Accord. Here’s a round-up of his misstatements.”)
- Chinese media says ‘selfish and irresponsible’ Trump has crippled U.S. leadership (And believe it or not, Chinese media is 100% correct.)
- Extreme warmth has dominated U.S. weather records since 2010. This is climate change. (And it’s extremely dangerous.)
- Trump is abdicating all the country’s moral power (Yep, it’s basically gone now, squandered in just four months. Fantastic, eh? So much “winning,” I can’t take it anymore!)
- What does Russia think about all this? ‘Washington has gone crazy.’
- Trump could spur the rise of a new, not-so-liberal world order (“Even if the Western World doesn’t end, the United States will be on the sidelines.”)
- Trump just drew the battle lines for 2018 and 2020 (“Withdrawing from the Paris agreement hurts the climate — and undermines the United States.”)
- Trump just betrayed the world. Now the world will fight back.
- Trump turns his back on the world (“The White House has dealt a blow to the effort to slow climate change — and to U.S. global leadership”)
- Don’t just blame Trump for quitting the Paris deal — blame the Republican Party (“Trump is solidly within the GOP’s consensus on climate change.” And that alone makes the GOP a disgrace to humanity, to the United States of America, to science and rationality.)
- We the Victims (“Trump’s Paris accord speech projected his own psychological issues all over the American people.” This guy needs serious, long-term psychological counseling, certainly not fit to be President.)
- The Weather Channel’s Response to Trump’s Paris Pullout Was Potent and Perfect
- From Paris to Bears Ears, Donald Trump’s “Obama derangement syndrome” is going critical (“Almost everything Donald Trump and his acolytes do is fueled by the desire to uproot or undo Barack Obama’s legacy”)
- Donald Trump’s populist promises continue to evaporate: The BS Carrier deal is only one example (“Remember how Trump vowed to save those jobs in Indiana? He didn’t — and the rest of his populism is fake, too”)
- Trump called the shooting at a Manila resort a “terrorist attack.” It wasn’t (“Calling the botched robbery in Manila ‘terrorism’ shows Trump is either uninformed or trying to manipulate us”)
- Trump’s argument for withdrawing from Paris agreement contains multi-trillion dollar math error (“In a cost-benefit analysis, you’re supposed to analyze the costs and the benefits.”)
- International leaders respond to Paris decision with anger, criticism (“Germany, Italy, and France said the agreement could not be renegotiated.”)
- White House orders agencies to ignore Democrats’ oversight requests (“Trump’s aides are trying to shut down the release of information that could be used to attack the president.”)
- Tech CEOs bemoan Trump’s Paris climate withdrawal
- Obama: Trump rejects future by pulling out of Paris climate pact (As usual, Obama is correct while Trump is wildly, dangerously wrong. That’s not a partisan statement, it’s simply a fact.)
- How Trump’s War on Free Speech Threatens the Republic (“The First Amendment, and the press, are in for a rough ride.”)
- Trump Railed Against China While Abandoning Paris. His Views Are Wildly Outdated.
- As U.S. backs away from climate pledges, India and China step up
- Why Abandoning Paris Is a Disaster for America (“The Obama administration’s brain trust on how Trump’s rejection of the global climate change agreement is a monumental blunder.”)

- Meet Frank Wagner a candidate for Virginia’s Governor
- Meet Ed Gillespie a candidate for Virginia’s Governor

- New accounts: Minutes-long struggle occurred before Virginia State Police special agent was shot
- Nova Parks wants to add ‘lazy river’ and a 40-year lease to Alexandria water park (“Great Waves would also add dog park and community park if city okays lease.”)
- Two communities and a proposal for a shared pool. Why it failed. (“Alexandria and Arlington both needed a competition-sized swimming pool. Both wanted it in their home territory.”)
- Fairfax County taps former high school principal to be new superintendent (“Scott Brabrand, now chief of Lynchburg schools, is expected to win Fairfax school board approval next week.”)
- Our splendid start to June continues. Soak it up through Saturday!
