Looks like Virginia House Education Committee Chair Del. Steve Landes (Hard-Right “R”) was in desperate need of some smelling salts and possibly a fainting couch this morning, as students testified passionately in support of REAL family life education for students throughout Virginia, as included in Del. Sam Rasoul (D-Roanoke)’s HB159:
Local school boards; family life education curricula. Requires each local school board to implement a comprehensive, sequential family life education curriculum in grades kindergarten through 12 that is consistent with the family life education Standards of Learning or curriculum guidelines developed by the Board of Education and removes from such standards and guidelines the requirement for instruction in the benefits, challenges, responsibilities, and value of marriage for men, women, children, and communities; abstinence education; the value of postponing sexual activity; and the benefits of adoption as a positive choice in the event of an unwanted pregnancy.
Check out the video below, as Chairman Landes bizarrely cuts off Graham Weinschenk with a rude, “young man do you realize what the bill actually does?” Then later, when Pablo Moulden uses the phrase “slut shaming,” Landes jumps in and tells him not to use language “not within the decorum of the committee.” The committee then proceeded to vote down this important legislation along – predictably – party lines (with Republicans on the wrong side, of course). Ugh…
