Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Monday, September 17. Regarding the Virginia Mercury story on the precipitous decline in Virginia’s corporate media, I’m glad they did the story, although this has been obvious to anyone who has paid attention, talked to ex-journalists, etc. over the years. At this point, there are VERY few reporters – let alone reporters with years of experience and “institutional memory” – covering Virginia politics. And, of course, the “bad guys” know this. Remember that Democracy Dies in Darkness, as the WaPo slogan says…
- California professor, writer of confidential Brett Kavanaugh letter, speaks out about her allegation of sexual assault
- Sen. Jeff Flake calls for Kavanaugh vote to be postponed until accuser is heard (“Flake was the first Republican to join Democrats in urging a delay in Thursday’s Senate Judiciary Committee vote. Republicans hold an 11-to-10 majority on the panel, and Flake’s opposition could stall the nomination.”)
- ‘I do not know this woman’: Trump allies rally to Kavanaugh’s defense (Wait, the “defense” is that Trump never met Kavanaugh’s accuser before? Well alrighty then…)
- Trump Believes There Is a ‘Conspiracy’ to Torpedo the Kavanaugh Nomination (Of course he does; he’s a conspiracy-theory freak.)
- Why God Is Laughing at Brett Kavanaugh (“American politics is about power, not principle. If anyone should know this, it’s Brett Kavanaugh.”)
- Murkowski: Committee ‘might’ need to consider delaying Kavanaugh vote
- Collins knocks Democrats over handling of Kavanaugh assault allegation (In her own cowardly, pathetic way, Susan Collins is the worst.)
- What Happens To Brett Kavanaugh’s Nomination Now?
- Why Brett Kavanaugh Might Lose Supreme Court Seat After Sexual Assault Allegation
- GOP Sens. Murkowski and Collins called out for hypocrisy on Al Franken — while they still consider Brett Kavanaugh
- Internet researchers claim Kavanaugh buddy Mark Judge has troubling history of posting photos of young girls
- Lingering Florence wreaking havoc in North and South Carolina — live updates
- Florence dumps torrential rain, raises floodwaters across the Carolinas
- ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’ Is a Myth (“And the Democratic Party has not actually become a band of radical leftists.”)
- 50 days out, Dems have momentum in midterm race
- Not Deranged. Determined! (“In the midterm elections, the resistance will finally have a chance to push back against Trump.”)
- The Note: Kavanaugh allegation tests Washington on #MeToo
- Yes, You Can Blame Bad Storms on Climate Change
- The ominous decline of social democracy (“All Americans have reason to worry about what’s happening across Europe — including the outcome of the vote that just took place in Sweden.”)
- Border Patrol Supervisor Arrested In Texas, Held In ‘Serial Killing Spree’
- Hillary Clinton: American Democracy Is in Crisis (“It’s been nearly two years since Donald Trump won enough Electoral College votes to become president of the United States…I hoped that my fears for our future were overblown. They were not. In the roughly 21 months since he took the oath of office, Trump has sunk far below the already-low bar he set for himself in his ugly campaign…I don’t use the word crisis lightly. There are no tanks in the streets. The administration’s malevolence may be constrained on some fronts—for now—by its incompetence. But our democratic institutions and traditions are under siege. We need to do everything we can to fight back. There’s not a moment to lose.”)
- Grim warnings for White House, Republicans ahead of election
- New leak shows Julian Assange sought Russian visa in 2010
- Thousands of Virginia inmates are believed to have hepatitis C and can’t access the cure
- Death by a thousand cuts: Newsroom staffing at Virginia’s biggest papers cut nearly in half since 2010 (“South, the VCU professor, said that while digital subscriptions have been successful at national outlets, it’s a tougher sell at the regional and community level.”)
- Leslie Cockburn Attends Annual Barbeque for the Albemarle County Democratic Committee
- Hileman: Northam will be judged by what he does on pipelines (“One thing is certain: whether or not this pipeline ultimately gets built, you will forever be judged by your ongoing silence and lack of action.” Agreed, this will be a black mark on Northam’s record…forever.)
- Editorial: Both parties are missing an opportunity on redistricting
- Street and Tomazin column: Set higher water standards to keep Virginia’s waterways clean
- Loudoun now has an elite science and technology academy of its own
- Florence delayed will not be Florence denied for Southwest Virginia.
