As Corey Stewart Triples Down on Attacking Danville, Denver Riggleman Refuses to Defend the Fifth District

Richmond, VA – In July, during a debate with Senator Tim Kaine, VA GOP standard-bearer Corey Stewart disparagingly claimed that in Danville, the heart of Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, “young people have left, the opioid crisis is completely out of control. The murder rate is way up. All crimes are way up. Suicides are way up, [and] you have boarded up shops…”

VA-05 GOP nominee Denver Riggleman? Silent.

Just days after his embarrassing debate performance, in a desperate and failed attempt to turn the page Corey doubled down on his disparaging attacks against the city stating that there is “no better place in Virginia and perhaps the country that shows the destructive effects of unfair trade agreements…” and that despite the progress Danville has made, the city “continues to suffer.”

Riggleman then? Silent.

Now this week, Corey tripled down on his baseless insults as he takes to attacking the city again stating that in Danville you’ll find “…boarded-up shops, closed down factories, you see where young people have left, and we can’t ignore this anymore…What happened to the city of Danville is unacceptable.”

Corey’s tasteless insult prompted Danville city leaders to walk out on Corey during his speech, including prominent Republican elected officials.

Riggleman now? Once again silent – refusing to condemn Corey for denigrating a city in the heart of the district he seeks to represent in Congress.

If Denver Riggleman can’t defend Danville in the face of Corey’s defaming remarks, then Denver doesn’t deserve to represent VA-05 in Congress.
