Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Thursday, December 27.
- Climate change needs ever-increasing attention. It didn’t get it from mainstream media in 2018. (“The media should be chasing down stories on climate science, the people being affected by climate change, and responses and solutions to the problem. Instead, even when they report on climate change, they’re still chasing Trump.”)
- Shutdown Enters Sixth Day With No Signs of Progress on Horizon
- As Shutdown Continues, Resolution May Depend on Definition of ‘Wall’
- Trump misleads about military pay raises again (Instead of writing “lies,” CNN goes for “misleads.” Nice.)
- Trump Imperils the Planet (“Endangered species, climate change — the administration is taking the country, and the world, backward.”)
- ‘A Breaking Point’: Second Child’s Death Prompts New Procedures at Border (“A Guatemalan boy who died in United States custody was moved at least four times over six days, underscoring how stretched the facilities are. Kirstjen M. Nielsen, the secretary of homeland security, said she had ordered her agency to bolster medical screenings of children at the border.”)
- Stocks Bounce Back From Christmas Eve Dive With Record One-Day Rise
- Underestimating Climate Change Cheats Investors (“Ignoring the long-term risks is easy, but refusing to face reality will only lead to tragedy for financial markets.”)
- Donald Trump Twitter Account Video Reveals Covert U.S. Navy SEAL Deployment During Iraq Visit
- Trump to Troops in Iraq: ‘We’re No Longer the Suckers, Folks’ (WTF???)
- Trump shows no signs of backing down over the border wall, shutdown during Iraq visit
- Trump’s Retreat on the Environment Is Affecting Communities Across America (“In just two years, President Trump has unleashed a regulatory rollback with little parallel in the past half-century.” It’s so hard to figure out what’s most heinous about Trump, but his assault on the environment is VERY high on the list.)
- Border wall impasse awaits senators returning to Washington
- What do the suburbs want? (“The suburbs abandoned Republicans in 2018, and they might not be coming back.”)
- Stop messing with the market, Mr. President
- USA TODAY/Suffolk Poll: What do Democrats want in 2020? Someone new – and Biden. But definitely not Hillary
- O’Rourke and Castro on collision course in Texas
- What Populists Do to Democracies (“According to our research, populist governments have deepened corruption, eroded individual rights, and inflicted serious damage on democratic institutions.”)
- Jerry Brown’s Greatest Legacy Is Proving California Is Governable (“After disparate tours in which he served as California’s youngest and oldest governor, Brown never lost his quirky asceticism.”)
- How Much of the Internet Is Fake? Turns Out, a Lot of It, Actually. (“Take something as seemingly simple as how we measure web traffic. Metrics should be the most real thing on the internet: They are countable, trackable, and verifiable, and their existence undergirds the advertising business that drives our biggest social and search platforms. Yet not even Facebook, the world’s greatest data–gathering organization, seems able to produce genuine figures.”)
- Homeland Security Chief Faults Parents, ‘Open Border’ Supporters In Migrant Kids’ Deaths (FU)
- Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker Incorrectly Claims Academic All-American Honors (This guy is a complete disaster.)
- Democrats Don’t Like to Be Told Who to Vote For”: Obama Has Flirted with Beto and Other Potential 2020 Rivals, and Biden Is Upset (“The former president wants to avoid the mistakes of 2016, when the field was cleared for Hillary. But Biden has other ideas.”)
- MSNBC Beats Fox News in Weekly Cable News Ratings for First Time Since 2000
- A LOOK BACK: Coal ash, pipelines and renewable energy were dominant environmental issues in 2018
- A LOOK BACK: After years of political battling, Virginia expands Medicaid
- Special election to replace Wexton could point way forward in N. Va. exurbs (This WaPo article is like a parody of everything bad/wrong about the corporate media. For instance, they try desperately to paint Jennifer Boysko – who, according to VAPLAN, is an average/centrist Democrat – into a lefty firebrand. Second, they desperately try to turn an election in a strongly “blue” district into a horserace. Third, their evidence for claiming Boysko is a lefty firebrand is that she…supports Medicaid expansion and opposes testing cosmetics or household cleaners on animals – OMG! Fourth, it claims May is a “moderate” for the same reason it claims Boysko is a “progressive Democrat” – because he supports Medicaid expansion. Seriously, it felt like my IQ went down about 30 points reading this crap.)

- Richmond mayor won’t say no to Dominion contributions (“a stance that puts him at odds with other prominent Democrats”)
- Stoney: No plans of turning down Dominion Energy donations in future campaigns (Wait, he won’t take money from payday lenders but WILL take money from Dominion, which is a far, far worse force in corrupting Virginia politics and trashing our planet than payday lenders – as bad as they are – will ever be? Make zero logical sense.)
- DNC Member from Virginia Posts Opposition to Instant Runoff/Ranked Choice Voting Measure, Intense Discussion Ensues
- Editorial: Why is Roanoke County so Republican? (“Why has Roanoke County become more Republican while other suburbs have become more Democratic? One likely answer is that Roanoke County has remained overwhelmingly white — 88 percent, according to the census — while other suburbs have become more diverse.”)
