Cook Political Report: Spanberger’s Race Moved From “Tossup” To “Lean Democratic” After Virginia Democrats Win Big In 2019 Races

Lean Democratic. Spanberger, a former CIA undercover operative, ran as a suburban pragmatist to unseat Freedom Caucus Rep. Dave Brat 50 percent to 48 percent in 2018, two years after President Trump had carried the seat 50 percent to 44 percent. But in September, Spanberger was one of seven “national security freshmen” who penned the letter that helped launch the impeachment inquiry.
Last Tuesday’s elections, however, were a positive sign for her: the Richmond suburbs are continuing to move in Democrats’ direction. Democrats picked up a Chesterfield County state senate district that heavily overlaps the 7th CD, and almost picked up another senate seat based in Henrico County (GOP state Sen. Siobhan Dunnavant only hung on thanks to precincts in Hanover County, which isn’t in the 7th CD).
