STAFFORD, VA—Today President Trump retweeted an extremist who declared that “the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat.” This type of hate is grounded in a slogan used to promote Native American genocide. It’s a continuation of Trump’s violent calls against political opponents and the further erosion and division of our communities all over the country. Donald Trump is President. He has hundreds of millions of social media followers across platforms and is the leader of not only this country but of the free world. His words matter and his retweets matter. Any Republican elected official who doesn’t condemn this sort of unacceptable language is complicit.
When President Trump shares a tweet declaring “the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat,” he’s radicalizing people. We cannot accept this new normal. The tolerance for such hateful rhetoric must end and we must elect leaders that unite, instead of divide. Our campaign is committed to building bridges and tearing down walls. In spite of this coronavirus pandemic, we have continued to reach out to constituents regardless of their political or partisan leanings, offering our message of compassion through action. Any elected member of the Republican party who doesn’t clearly condemn Trump’s act and demand recantation is complicit. I urge Congressman Wittman and the GOP to do what’s morally and ethically right and condemn Trump’s harmful actions and rhetoric.
