Senator Tammy Duckworth and Congresswoman Elaine Luria Join National Women for Biden Call

Yesterday, Biden for President held a national Women for Biden call with Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth and Virginia Congresswoman Elaine Luria. A combat veteran and U.S. Senator from Illinois, Senator Duckworth talked about her career of service and what it means to serve our country.

“What we’re seeing right now in this moment is a failure in leadership,” said Senator Tammy Duckworth. “In the White House you have a President and a Vice President who have failed to respond to this global pandemic … And those failures have just compounded to the point now that … over 125,000 dead Americans. And we have an economy that is in dire straits. And we have a whole issue with systemic racism that exists in our society. And so we are at a time when our nation is facing multiple crises and we have an occupant in the White House and the Oval Office, who’s not capable of meeting even just a single one of them … So we have some real challenges in front of us. I think that we do have the opportunity here to overcome them, but it means that we have a lot of hard work in front of us. And the next President of the United States, Joe Biden is going to have a lot of things that he’s going to have to face, and he’s going to need all of us to pull together to get him into office.”

“Every day when I watch the news and … checks and balances just seem to be eroding away,” said Congresswoman Elaine Luria. “And I think that’s so important why we’re doing what we’re doing to have new leadership at the top, to have Joe Biden, to help put this country back on the right path, and help mend our relationships with our allies, to help mend the heart and the soul of the country … I think that everyone who’s joining us today understands that and we’re really proud to have all of you as part of our team in that effort.”

Asked about Vice President Biden’s respect for the military, Senator Duckworth said: “First and foremost the Biden’s are a military family. They are part of the military because they are a military family and they get it. They understand what it’s like to have a son be deployed overseas into harm’s way. They know what it’s like to watch their grandchildren have to say bye to their dad as he puts on his uniform and goes off to serve this country on foreign soil and face the dangers of combat … They are truly a military family and have the highest regard for our military men and women and our military families.”
