It is with profound sadness that we wake up today in a world without my dear friend and mentor Saba Shami. He passed away last night after a courageous struggle with cancer.
He was a powerful force in Virginia politics, a strong progressive voice, the most ardent activist for the Palestinian cause, and a builder of the broader Arab-American community.
He spoke out strongly and supported candidates dedicated to diversity and inclusion. He defended Arab Americans, Muslim Americans, and Asian Americans wherever and whenever it was needed without fear of what others would say.
He mentored and supported many of Virginia’s elected officials and made sure we all had a voice.
On a personal note, I would not be where I am without his constant support and love. He was a giant in the world of community activism and he lived his life to serve his family, friends and his community.
May he Rest In Peace and May God grant his family comfort in these difficult times.
Our wonderful friend and community activist Fred Shwaery wrote a nice piece about Saba early this morning.
