As Impeachment Trial Unfolds and the Horrors of 1/6 Are Recounted, VA GOP 2021 Gubernatorial Candidate Kirk Cox is Scrambling to Double Down On Trumpism

From the Democratic Party of Virginia:

Kirk Cox is Scrambling to Double Down On Trumpism

Richmond, VA — In this year’s General Assembly session, career politician Kirk Cox has one priority: his campaign for governor — and he’s clearly worried. Instead of leading the pack in the GOP primary, he is desperately struggling to keep up with frontrunner Amanda Chase. Cox is scrambling to prove his commitment to Donald Trump’s agenda — and what better way to do so than voting with Chase as often as possible?

Over the last few weeks, as the General Assembly has taken crucial steps to move Virginia forward, Cox has used every opportunity to remind Virginians of his commitment to hyper-partisan extremism. Cox has continued to put himself far to the right of a majority of Virginians by voting:

  • Against marriage equality — which he calls a “matter of conscience.”
  • Against the abolition of the death penalty.
  • Against restoring felons’ voting rights once their sentences are completed.
  • Against legalizing marijuana for people 21 and older.
  • Against providing paid sick leave to essential workers.

“Kirk Cox knows he’s being left behind in this primary, so he is desperately playing catch up by taking far-right votes,” said Manuel Bonder, DPVA spokesman. “Cox has a long track record of opposing policies that would make Virginia, healthier, more prosperous, and more equitable — but that’s not enough to win this Republican primary. Cox is doubling down on right-wing extremism to keep up with frontrunner Amanda Chase and prove his commitment to Trumpism.”
