This week in VA-02, GOP primary candidate Tommy Altman had big news to share: Madison Cawthorn is coming to town.
Cawthorn is the latest big Republican name to weigh in on the VA-02 Republican primary, which has become increasingly bitter as the GOP candidates fight to win over their base. Jen Kiggans, the “establishment pick” who has fielded criticism from local conservatives for her “consultant-driven” campaign, is getting dragged further to the right every day by Jarome Bell, the America First candidate who recently won the endorsement of Virginia Congressman Bob Good.
Madison Cawthorn’s visit to Virginia today shows just how far to the right this primary has swung. Hardly a coveted endorsement, Cawthorn has come under fire for calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a “thug” who ran an “incredibly evil” government. And just last week, the Republican caucus spiraled into chaos when Cawthorn claimed that Republican lawmakers had invited him to take part in orgies and even snorted lines of cocaine right in front of him.
As the VA-02 primary races further to the right every day, will Jen Kiggans denounce the extreme, right-wing rhetoric that Madison Cawthorn is bringing to Virginia as he touts her primary opponent on the campaign trail? Or will she continue to cave to her far-right base?
