See below for video of Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA02)’s appearance this morning on Meet the Press. As you can see, when Chuck Todd – as is his wont – asked her the cynical question about what the politics for her – representing a “swing” district – of being on the 1/6 committee looked like, Rep. Luria responded as follows:
“It’s that important; this is the kind of thing that will define the history of our country and our democracy moving forward. And if we can’t preserve that, I don’t know what the country will look like for my daughters. So I thought that this effort was so important, that if it means in November I don’t get reelected, I can sleep at night…I’m doing the right thing, I served in uniform for 20 years, I take the oath seriously that I took the first time when I was 17 and started at the Naval Academy and throughout my entire career and again in Congress. So the work of this committee is more important than something like my own personal reelection.”
That, of course, is exactly the right response and also exactly the right attitude for any public servant to have. But sadly, many public servants – particularly Trumpists – do NOT have that attitude, but to the contrary are willing to say or do ANYTHING, including betraying our constitution and our democracy, to stay in power. That includes Reps. Rob Wittman (R-VA01), Bob Good (R-VA05), Ben Cline (R-VA06) and Morgan Griffith (R-VA09) from Virginia. It also characterizes Jen Kiggans, who is Rep. Elaine Luria’s likely Republican opponent this fall, and is as cynical and calculated as it is humanly possible to be.
In STARK contrast, Rep. Luria is a true American hero and every single voter in VA02 – Democrat, Republican or Independent – should enthusiastically support her for reelection.
For more from the Meet the Press interview, see below for Rep. Luria saying Trump “had a duty to act” on 1/6/21, but that he did NOT act to stop the insurrection. Rep. Luria added that Trump “had the microphone, he could speak to the whole country,” that “his duty was to stand up and say something and try to stop this” – but he didn’t do that, instead committed “dereliction of duty – he had a duty to act, but he didn’t.” Rep. Luria added that her understanding is that Trump NEVER inquired about the health and safety of VP Pence on 1/6/21, even as pro-Trump insurrections were screaming to “hang Mike Pence.” Horrifying, and clearly Trump needs to be charged with multiple crimes just for the 1/6 coup attempt, let alone all his other, many crimes.
