Yesli Vega & Ted Cruz Want to See Same-Sex Marriage Overturned
Vega – “I support the traditional definition of marriage.”
Richmond, VA – Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation to protect Americans’ right to marry whomever they love – and the vote highlighted just how dangerous Republican Yesli Vega would be if she makes it to Congress. With marriage equality hanging in the balance in this country, Vega’s record of opposing same-sex marriage and voting against protections for LGBTQ Virginians would be a terrible threat to our individual liberties.
Last weekend, Yesli Vega’s biggest supporter Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said he believes the Supreme Court was “clearly wrong” to legalize gay marriage in Obergefell v. Hodges.
This comes after Cruz stumped for Yesli Vega in a last-ditch effort to push her over the edge in the June jump-ball primary.
In Justice Clarence Thomas’s concurring opinion in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling – which upended nearly 50-years of precedent by overturning Roe v. Wade – Thomas said the Court “should reconsider” its past rulings codifying rights to same-sex marriage, contraception, and same-sex relationships. Thomas’s wife Virginia “Ginni” Thomas – who is under scrutiny for her role in the January 6 insurrection – endorsed Vega in the VA-07 GOP primary as well.
Like Cruz and Thomas, Yesli Vega has made her anti-same-sex marriage stance very clear. In a recent forum, Vega stated, “I support the traditional definition of marriage,” and as a Supervisor in Prince William County, Vega consistently voted against crucial LGBTQ protections and proclamations:
- Vega abstained from proclaiming June 2022 and June 2021 as Pride Month, and even outright voted against June 2020 as Pride Month – even though the measure had previously passed unanimously, with Republican support.
- Vega voted against adjusting to the county code to comply with the Virginia Values Act to extend nondiscrimination protections to LGBTQ+ Virginians.
- Vega made dangerously inaccurate and homophobic remarks, saying that public schools “don’t exist for left-wing activists to groom students towards a sexual preference.” And made the false claim that students were “forced to watch and listen to a homosexual romance being read by the school librarian.”
“Given the chance, Yesli Vega would jump at the opportunity to ban same-sex marriage in the Commonwealth,” said DPVA Spokesperson Gianni Snidle. “No one should be discriminated against based on who you are or who you love. Yesli Vega’s out-of-touch and outdated anti-LGBTQ policies show how radical she is – even going as far as spearheading policies that target the youngest and most vulnerable members of our communities. This November Virginians will see her for who she really is, a radical extremist out of step with everyday Virginians.”
