After Pledging Repeatedly to Vote Against Kevin McCarthy for Speaker, Yesli Vega Flip Flops and Now Says She Supports Him

Yesli Vega Reverses Her Opposition to McCarthy in Leadership
As Vega’s campaign flounders, she flip-flops on her pledge to vote against McCarthy for a leadership role

With just 57 days until Election Day, cash-strapped Yesli Vega is falling in line behind her party bosses in a desperate attempt to help her floundering campaign.

In an April radio interview, Yesli Vega pledged she would vote against Kevin McCarthy if he ran for Speaker of the House:

FREDERICKS: “Are you going to vote for McCarthy for leader, yes or no?” […] VEGA: “So if I’m talking to folks in the 7th District about change and being that change, we have to put our money where our mouth is, and you know, I’m gonna make decisions based on the will of the people. […] The answer is I am going to vote for the candidate that wants to put the American people first. I’m not happy with what’s been happening, so my answer is no, I wouldn’t support Kevin.”

Later that month, Vega doubled down on her opposition to Kevin McCarthy in leadership at a forum:

“The definition of insanity is doing what? The same thing over and over again and expecting a what? A different result. My answer […] is no, I would not vote for Kevin McCarthy. I wouldn’t.”

But today, POLITICO reports, Vega reversed her stance:

“Prince William County Supervisor Yesli Vega said firmly she would not back McCarthy on a radio show in April.

“Both candidates, who are running for blue-leaning districts, walked back their previous comments when approached by POLITICO.

“‘Leader McCarthy has worked very hard to unify our party and build a massive operation to take back the majority,’ Vega said in a statement. ‘He has earned my support in this effort.’”

The embarrassing flip-flop is just the latest sign that Vega is making desperate, eleventh-hour changes to attempt to revive her anemic campaign – but sucking up to her party leaders might be too little, too late.

“Every day Yesli Vega makes it clear that she answers to her party bosses, not to Virginians,” said DCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson. “Voters have seen Vega’s true extremist colors, whether it’s her support for outlawing abortion or her offensive suggestion that rape survivors are less likely to become pregnant. It’s going to take more than Kevin McCarthy’s favor to bail out Yesli this November.”
