CCAN Action Fund Announces First-Ever Climate Champion Endorsements for US House of Representatives

Leading grassroots advocacy group endorses candidates Luria, Spanberger, and Trone in 2022 general election as defenders of climate and democracy

Takoma Park, MD:  Today, the CCAN Action Fund – advocacy arm of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN)  announced its endorsement of three candidates for the US House of Representatives. Those candidates are Congresswoman Elaine Luria (VA- District 2), Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (VA-District 7), and Congressman David Trone (MD-District 6). In CCAN Action Fund’s seven-year history, this is the first time the organization has endorsed candidates for the House of Representatives, demonstrating the urgency of electing national decision-makers who will act urgently on climate and defend democracy.

CCAN Action Fund has endorsed these three candidates for their demonstrated commitment to supporting climate justice legislation. This includes voting for the Inflation Reduction Act and other climate legislation throughout their tenure in Congress. The group’s endorsement is also based on the candidates’ proven support for expanding voting rights and protecting constitutional democracy in America.

“CCAN Action Fund is taking this unprecedented step – endorsing candidates for the upcoming Congressional election – because these champions have proven that they can pass meaningful climate legislation, and we need to build on the success they have achieved, not reverse it.” — Mike Tidwell, Executive Director, CCAN Action Fund.

“The election in November could mean the end of federal climate legislation for a generation, or it could finally unlock the Green New Deal. It could mean the continued practice of sacrificing the most disenfranchised, or the opportunity to right the wrongs of climate injustice. It could lead to the end of American democracy, or it could usher in unprecedented voting rights. Too much hangs in the balance for us to sit on the side lines, so we are putting our hand on the scale on the side of justice.” — Quentin Scott, Federal Campaigns Director, CCAN Action Fund.
