See below for a letter sent this morning to Susan Beals, Virginia Commissioner of Elections, “by leading voting rights organizations – the national Fair Elections Center and the League of Women Voters of Virginia – calling on her to comply with the National Voter Registration Act of 1993.” According to these organizations:

In Virginia, technical issues with the state’s voter registration system have backlogged over 100,000 voter registration applications. Registrars are now receiving thousands of applications – some dating back to May – forcing staff to work overtime to process them in time for the midterms.

The letter calls on Beals to take the following actions:

      • Take steps to determine the acceptability of vote-by-mail applications where applicant’s registrations are not showing as eligible due to the technical issues,
      • Continue processing all voter registration applications from state DMVs until complete and adding relevant individuals to the list of eligible voters ahead of the midterm election,
      • Accept provisional ballots from voters who show up in-person to vote, but are not on the list of eligible voters due to the processing delays.
