This is one of the differences between Democrats and Republicans – the former want to make it easier for people to vote, the latter want to make it harder or impossible. And yes, as the NAACP Virginia correctly argues, “The NAACP urges every Virginia voter to vote YES on the Voting Rights Constitutional Amendment for Automatic Restoration of Rights on November 3rd and make this permanent.” Because right now, Virginia “is one of only two states that still has a Jim Crow-era law banning anyone convicted of a felony from voting for the rest of their lives, unless the governor decides to restore an individual’s rights. This provision was enacted in Virginia’s 1902 constitution explicitly to stop Black Virginians from voting. To overturn it, we need a constitutional amendment.” Let’s do it!
NAACP Virginia State Conference Commends Governor Spanberger for Restoring Voting Rights to More Than 66,000 Virginians
Richmond, Virginia – The NAACP Virginia State Conference today commends Governor Abigail Spanberger for restoring voting rights to more than 66,000 Virginians, marking a historic step forward in the Commonwealth’s commitment to democracy and full civic participation. This executive action returns the fundamental right to vote to tens of thousands of Virginians who have rejoined their communities.
“Governor Spanberger’s decision to restore voting rights to more than 66,000 Virginians reflects the moral courage and leadership our Commonwealth deserves,” stated Rev. Cozy Bailey, President, NAACP Virginia State Conference. “Voting is a fundamental right of citizenship – and every Virginian who has returned to their community deserves that right fully restored. The NAACP urges every Virginia voter to vote YES on the Voting Rights Constitutional Amendment for Automatic Restoration of Rights on November 3rd and make this permanent. Early voting begins September 18th.”
