Cheney: “We Cannot Afford To Elect” Politicians Like Vega

Vega Promised to Release, Compensate January 6 Insurrectionists

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) criticized Trump-endorsed Yesli Vega’s extreme views — following Cheney’s endorsement of U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger’s reelection campaign.

Cheney told NBC4 Washington on Saturday: “We’re in a moment where we cannot afford to elect people to office who excuse in any way what President Trump is saying about the last elections, people who suggest, as Abigail’s opponent has, that somehow January 6 was just the exercise of First Amendment rights.” Watch the full story here.

Cheney’s comments come after Vega’s extreme views on the 2020 election and the January 6, 2021 insurrection were highlighted once again on Saturday.

According to the Washington Post:

Spanberger’s opponent, Vega, was endorsed by Trump last week … and she has previously sympathized with Jan. 6 rioters as unfairly persecuted, calling them “a group of people exercising their First Amendment right.”

In a recording of the same forum obtained by VPM, Vega additionally said “there’s evidence that continues to come out that indicates that the election of 2020 was interfered with.

Asked what she thought of Trump’s false claims of voter fraud, Vega said, “I am not Donald Trump, I don’t know what goes on in his mind, and I can’t speak to what he stated.”

Earlier this year, Spanberger was ranked the most bipartisan Member of Congress from Virginia and one of the most bipartisan Members of Congress overall.

Yesli Vega, meanwhile, pledged to “sponsor legislation” to “release and seek compensation” for those facing charges for attacking the U.S. Capitol.
