CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA – Today, elected leaders and Virginians launched the “Worst of Winsome” tour, calling out Sears’ extreme record including her support of a near-total abortion ban and her moral opposition to same-sex marriage.
“Marriage equality is fundamental,” said Charlottesville Clerk of Court Llezelle Dugger who issued the first same-sex marriage license when it became legal in Virginia. “The overwhelming majority of Virginians support same-sex marriage. Winsome Earle-Sears wants to take that away.”
“Looking at Winsome Earle-Sears’ extreme record it’s crystal clear that if she makes it to the Governor’s mansion she won’t fight for Virginians, she’ll just push her extreme agenda forward,” said Senator Creigh Deeds. “From rolling back reproductive rights and supporting a near total abortion ban to backing Trump’s attacks on Virginia jobs and Medicaid to defunding public education and being ‘morally opposed’ to marriage equality, Winsome Earle-Sears is wrong for Virginia.”
“Winsome Earle-Sears has an extensive record that’s out of touch with Virginians and if she has the chance, she’ll enact this extreme agenda that will leave Virginians’ rights open to attacks. Virginians deserve a leader who represents their values and will listen to and fight for what the Commonwealth wants and needs. It’s crystal clear that Winsome Earle-Sears won’t do that,” said Delegate Katrina Callsen.
“While I have worked to protect women’s ability to make their own health decisions, Winsome Earle-Sears has an extreme agenda that would strip Virginia women of their right to make their own healthcare decisions,” said Delegate Amy Laufer. “If Winsome Earle-Sears has the chance, she will enact extreme restrictions on women’s healthcare and strip women of their ability to make their own healthcare decisions.”
Here’s what to know about Sears’ extreme record:
- Sears supports an extreme six week abortion ban similar to the law that took effect in Texas that bans abortion before most women know they are pregnant.
- Sears told Virginia women “we need to make our choices before we’re pregnant, not, you know, after, you already made a choice,” and left a handwritten note that she is “morally opposed to this bill […]” on the constitutional amendment that would protect reproductive freedom in Virginia, including contraception, abortion, and IVF.
- Sears has defended Trump’s attacks on Virginia’s workforce and economy and she would help Trump “get the job done” if she were governor.
- Sears was caught on tape dismissing and laughing off the attacks on Virginia jobs saying “the media is making it out to be a huge, huge thing… and I don’t understand why.”
- Sears has a long record of supporting legislation that would cut funding from Virginia’s public schools.
- Sears also left a handwritten note on a bill protecting marriage equality that she is “morally opposed” to the legislation and Sears doubled down on her opposition to marriage equality and refused to say that she would support anything other than civil unions for same-sex couples.
