Great job by VA State Senator Louise Lucas on MSNBC yesterday, talking about “standing up to Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin’s attempt to ban abortion at 15 weeks.” As Sen. Lucas said:
“One thing we know is that 7 in 10 people in Virginia want us to have access to healthcare, they especially want to have safe legal and accessible healthcare in Virginia when it comes to reproductive rights…and we just wanted to make sure that we beat back all of the efforts that Gov. Youngkin tried to pass off on us, tried to pass his abortion bans. But we prevailed today. We have defeated all of those legislative bans that he has tried to push on the Commonwealth of Virginia…It’s a very good day for us here in Virginia…He’s out of touch, he didn’t listen to us, we told him that Virginians believe that abortion should remain safe, legal and accessible and we told him early on that we would reject any bans on reproductive freedom every time a bill was filed…I’m thinking that this is just the beginning. But I’m telling, you, I’m in for the fight of my life for me, my daughters, my granddaughters, and we will not rest because we will not allow the Commonwealth to be turned back…I’m sure [Republicans are] not going to quit, but neither are we…We’re going to keep the trashcan nearby; we’re thinking about going to a shredder because so many bills are coming in that we’re going to need to get rid of; we’re going to shred those bills and send them back to the governor…”
