Last night, Rep. Jen Kiggans voted against a bipartisan amendment that would block new oil and gas leasing in any tract located off the coast of Virginia.
Kiggans’ decision to side with Big Oil comes at serious risk to her own district’s coastal communities, economy, and environment.
The bipartisan amendment, introduced by Rep. Abigail Spanberger, would protect Virginia’s shoreline from the threat of yet another major oil spill, which would be catastrophic for Virginia’s military readiness, critical seafood industry, and safety.
Yet Kiggans, who has received nearly $30,000 from the oil and gas industry, chose instead to use her power in Congress to put coastal Virginia at risk and vote against protecting her own community from the threat of Big Oil.
DCCC spokesperson Nebeyatt Betre:
“Jen Kiggans’ blatant disregard for Virginia’s environment and Virginia Beach’s clear opposition to offshore drilling is unacceptable. Voters won’t forget how quickly she put Virginia at risk just to make life easier for Big Oil.”
