HD62 Dem Nominee Sara Ratcliffe: “I can’t say if Mr. Freitas has met all the qualifications for candidacy legally, but his actions are dubious at the very least.”

As usual, Freitas' candidacy is a hot mess

1

See below for a press release from the Sara Ratcliffe (D) for HD62 campaign regarding this story by WMRA, which reports:

Freitas, a Republican, was first elected to the General Assembly in 2015 to represent what was then district 30, which included Madison and Orange counties and part of Culpeper. He’s now running against Democratic challenger Sara Ratcliffe to represent the new district 62. Tax records show he owns a home just north of the town of Culpeper – but that property is in district 61.

WMRA obtained the certificate of candidate qualification Freitas filed with the Virginia Department of Elections this year – and it lists a different address than the home he’s owned since 2010. Instead, it lists an address just southeast of town, which is in district 62. That property is owned by Robin McMichael – who, according to a 2019 Virginia Mercury article, is Freitas’ mother.

And yes, this is the same Nick Freitas whose shenanigans you’ve read about previously. Here’s a very short list just to give you a flavor of what we’re dealing with:

In other words, the guy’s been a hot mess for a long time..and it’s long past time for him to be replaced in the House of Delegates by someone competent, reasonable, etc.

Sara Ratcliffe Responds to Allegations About Del. Freitas’ Residency

Ruckersville, VA – In response to a report released on August 3, 2023 by WMRA Radio surrounding questions about Nick Freitas’ residency in the 62nd House of Delegates District, Sara Ratcliffe (D) made the following statement:

“In past years, we have seen Nick Freitas skirt the laws, rules, and regulations set forth by the Virginia Department of Elections for qualification for elected office. This would not be the first time Mr. Freitas has tiptoed around the edges in qualifying to run for office. I would like to remind voters that missing paperwork in 2019 meant he had to run as a write-in candidate. During that campaign he was bankrolled by conservative Ohio billionaire Richard Uihlein, a staunch opponent of reproductive rights. Again in 2020, while running for the 7th Congressional District nomination, Mr. Freitas missed the filing deadline for the nominating convention. Recent media reports on this pattern raise important questions about his disregard for following the rules and the proper qualifications to run for office in the Commonwealth.

We are currently working with the Virginia Democratic House Caucus to determine the legitimacy of his residency and whether that will affect his eligibility to run in the 62nd District. My campaign is focused on the concerns and needs of the hard working families in the 62nd District and how to provide them with the best opportunities to thrive. I can’t say if Mr. Freitas has met all the qualifications for candidacy legally, but his actions are dubious at the very least. Certainly, I question the fitness of any so-called leader who flouts the rules to win.” – Sara Ratcliffe, Democratic Candidate for Delegate, District 62.
