You may recall that back in May, then-Virginia Delegate Michelle Maldonado (D-HD20/Manassas) announced that she’d be resigning her seat at the end of the month (to take a new job at the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation). Soon after Maldonado’s announcement, Manassas City Councilwoman Sonia Vásquez Luna announced her candidacy for the seat, which is an overwhelmingly “blue” district (67% Abigail Spanberger, 56% Kamala Harris), so should be an easy Democratic “hold” in the special election scheduled for November 3. Currently, according to VPAP, Councilwoman Luna is the only candidate listed as running for this seat, although Republicans have yet to nominate someone (one of the Republican candidates is the older brother of George Zimmerman – yes, THAT George Zimmerman; yikes!).
As for Sonia Vásquez Luna, I’ve never met her, but she seems very impressive – you can learn more about her here and here, including:
- “She came to the United States from El Salvador in 2001 with big dreams and limited resources. While working to support her mother and sisters, she attended English classes at night determined to build a better future through hard work and perseverance. In 2010, she chose Manassas as home, drawn by its affordability and strong sense of community. Like many families here, she was seeking the opportunity to become a first-time homeowner and a place where her young and growing active-duty military family could settle down and thrive.”
- “Councilwoman Vásquez Luna earned an Associate of Science in Business Administration from Northern Virginia Community College and a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the National Labor College. A dedicated labor leader, she made history as the first immigrant woman elected Business Manager of LIUNA Local Union, on January 1, 2019, and continues to serve in that role.”
- “She also holds leadership positions and volunteers with organizations that support working families across Virginia. Councilwoman Vásquez Luna has served her community as an election officer for more than a decade in Fairfax County, Prince William County, and the City of Manassas, and has also served on the Towing Ordinance Advisory Board. She is the proud mother of two children who attend Manassas City Public Schools.”

So with that, see below for a statement by the Virginia House Democratic Caucus, endorsing Luna for the special election in HD20, noting her “vast experience in local government and community organizing,” her “past decade standing up for working families,” etc. So on November 3, hopefully the voters of HD20 will elect Sonia Vásquez Luna overwhelmingly, keeping the seat in capable Democratic hands.
Virginia House Democratic Caucus Leadership Endorses Sonia Vásquez Luna for HD-20
RICHMOND, VA — Today, the Virginia House Democratic Caucus leadership proudly endorsed Sonia Vásquez Luna for Delegate in the special election for House District 20.
“Sonia Vásquez Luna has brought the voices of her community to the forefront of her service for over a decade,” said Speaker Don Scott. “We look forward to welcoming someone who understands their community’s needs and is prepared to represent them in the House of Delegates.”
“Sonia Vásquez Luna’s vast experience in local government and community organizing has given her the tools she needs to deliver real results for Virginians in Prince William County and beyond,” said Majority Leader Charniele Herring. “She has spent the past decade standing up for working families – a track record I look forward to seeing her build on in the General Assembly.”

Sonia Vásquez Luna has served the City of Manassas as a City Council member since 2023, where she has focused on supporting working families, expanding accessible transportation, improving public education, and more. She is an experienced labor organizer and has served as the Business Manager of LIUNA Local Union 572 since 2019, Executive Board Member of the LIUNA District Council, and Second Vice President of Northern Virginia AFL-CIO. The special election for House District 20 is scheduled for November 3rd, 2026.
