Live Blog: Virginia Primary Election Results 8/4/26

UPDATE 7:25 am – In VA01, Dems cast 46.9k votes last night, up from just 27.5k votes cast in their 2018 Trump midterm primary. So that’s excellent!  On the other hand, in VA05, I’ve got to say I’m not thrilled to see Republicans cast nearly 13k more votes (49.9k vs. 37.0k) than Democrats – what happened there?

UPDATE 9:03 pm – Joy Powers ended up winning the Democratic nomination in VA09 by about 14 points (51%-37%) over Adam Murphy.

UPDATE 8:58 pm – Top vote-getters tonight for US House are Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA08) with 37,027; Rep. John McGuire (R-VA05) with 36,386; former Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA02) with 24,369; Shannon Taylor (D-VA01) with 23,001; former Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA05) with 20,751. Biggest margins of victory include McGuire (+69 points), Luria (+64 points), Perriello (+63 points), Dave Beckwith (+52 points), Beyer (+49 points).

UPDATE 8:03 pm – In Roanoke City, with 17/20 precincts reporting, the top three finishers for City Council right now are Raekwon M. Moore (29.9%), Danny Clawson (22.2%), Vivian Sanchez-Jones (20.4%)…followed by Peter Volosin (13.8%) and Harvey Brookins (13.7%). For Chesterfield Board of Supervisors, with 13/15 precincts reporting, it’s LeQuan Hylton 57%-Kathryn Crosby 43%. And for Harrisonburg City Council, it’s Dany R. Fleming (34.9%) and Monica Robinson (32.9%) as the top-two finishers.

UPDATE 7:48 pm – In VA05 right now, Democrat Tom Perriello has 6,756 votes, while his soon-to-be Republican opponent, Rep. John McGuire (R-VA05), has 13,128 votes, with a similar number of precincts reporting. Not great…

UPDATE 7:44 pm – In Arlington, incumbent County Board member Matt de Ferranti is winning, with 31/54 precincts reporting, with 55% of the vote over Julie Farnam (27.9%) and James DeVita (17.1%). Closer than expected…

UPDATE 7:40 pm: Rep. Don Beyer will win VA08, of course (he’s currently ahead by 45 points with nearly 1/3 of the vote counted) – zero surprise there. Rep. John McGuire (R-VA05) is winning easily over Melanie Lucero with 85% of the vote (30/303 precincts reporting). Democrat Joy Powers is leading Adam Murphy 50.1%-34.8% in the VA09 Dem primary, with nearly half the precincts reporting, and should win the nomination as had been expected. In the VA10 GOP primary, Dave Beckwith will win overwhelmingly, and in the VA07 GOP primary, Douglas Ollivant will win by a wide margin (it’s currently 54.9%-31.9% with 143/192 precincts reporting).

UPDATE 7:33 pm: Decision Desk has called VA01 for Shannon Taylor, as expected, and VA02 for Elaine Luria, also as expected.  They’ve also called the US Senate Republican primary for Bert Mizusawa, again as expected – no surprises so far tonight. Tom Perriello also will win VA05 easily – congrats!

UPDATE 7:32 pm – With 37/221 precincts reporting in the VA01 Dem primary, it’s Shannon Taylor with 53.9% over Salaam Bhatti 17.3%-Jason Knapp 11.3%-Elizabeth Dempsey Beggs 7.5%-Tim Cywinski 4.5%-Mel Tull 3.2%-Ericka Kopp 2.3%. In the VA05 Dem primary, Tom Perriello is romping (with 17/303 precincts reporting), with 83.3% over his two opponents. In VA08, Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA08) is also winning big (with 28/172 precincts reporting), with 65.7% of the vote, followed by Mo Seifeldein at 18.9%.  And in the VA02 Dem primary, former Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA02) is running away with it, with 83.8% followed by Nila Devanath at 12.8%, with 20/222 precincts reporting.

UPDATE 7:26 pm – With 431/2,534 precincts reporting in the VA GOP’s US Senate primary, Bert Mizusawa is running away with it, with 53.5% over David Williams (26.7%).

UPDATE 7:20 pm – With 13/221 precincts reporting in the VA01 Dem primary, it’s Shannon Taylor with 54.3% over Salaam Bhatti 18.6%-Jason Knapp 9.3%-Elizabeth Dempsey Beggs 6.7%-Tim Cywinski 5.5%-Mel Tull 3.5%-Ericka Kopp 2.2%. In the VA05 Dem primary, Tom Perriello is romping, with 84.2% over his two opponents. In VA08, Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA08) is also winning big, with 69.9%, followed by Mo Seifeldein at 16.1%.  And in the VA02 Dem primary, former Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA02) is running away with it, with 86.5% followed by Nila Devanath at 10.6%.

UPDATE 7:17 pm – With 177 of 2,534 precincts reporting in the VA GOP US Senate primary, it’s Bert Mizusawa 52.4%-David Williams 26.4%-Kim Farington 21.3%. And with 13 of 192 precincts reporting in the VA07 GOP primary, it’s Douglas Ollivant 57.4%-Philip Harding 28.2%-Ricky Smithers 14.4%. With 93 of 197 precincts reporting in the VA10 GOP primary, it’s Dave Beckwith with 73.8%-Julie Perry 20.4%-Anthony Suttles 5.1%.

• For VA07 (on the Republican side): Philip Harding, Douglas Olivant, Ricky Smithers

• For Arlington County Board (on the Democratic side): County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti (the presumed favorite), James DeVita, Julie Farnam
• For Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors (Dale District; on the Democratic side): LeQuan Monnier Hylton, Kathryn M. Crosby
• Harrisonburg City Council  (on the Democratic side):  Krista Nichole Gross, Monica Lynn Robinson, Dany Fleming, Kathy Meredith Hendley
• Roanoke City Council (on the Democratic side – top three finishers): Harvey D Brookins, Raekwon Moore, Peter Volosin, Vivian Sanchez-Jones, Shannon Clawson
• Note: I’m not clear about who the candidates are in the Montgomery County Sheriff’s primary listed by the State Board of Elections

As of 8/1, early voting turnout was as follows:

• Democrats led Republicanss 97,064-67,350, despite Rs having a statewide primary (for US Senate) and Ds not having one
• On the Democratic side, VA08 led in turnout, followed by VA01…with VA09 way behind
• In 2018, the VA01 Democratic primary saw 27,538 final votes cast, whereas as of 8/1 we were at just 21,255 early votes cast; the VA02 Democratic primary in 2018 saw 28,162 votes cast, compared to just 17,871 early votes cast as of 8/1; and the VA09 Democratic primary in 2018 saw 13,677 votes cast (final/total), compared to just 9,184 early votes cast as of 8/1. We’ll see if primary day turnout is strong enough to catch up or even surpass 2018 Democratic primary turnout.

With that, stay tuned for results, which should start coming in soon after polls close at  7 pm. Oh, and once the Democratic primary winners are chosen, let’s hope that everyone comes together and supports them, because the goal this fall should be to defeat Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA02) for sure, Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA01) as well, and Rep. John McGuire (R-VA05) if at all possible!
