See below for a press release from the Tom Perriello for VA05 campaign about his new ad, “Wall of Corruption.” Honestly, I have mixed feelings about this ad. On the one hand, I absolutely agree that Democratic candidates this year should tie people’s struggles on affordability, etc. directly to the Trump Republican Party’s corruption. So that’s good. On the other hand, this ad doesn’t specifically call out Trump and the Republican Party as BY FAR AND AWAY the #1 villains when it comes to corruption in American politics; instead, this ad uses more general/generic language like “politicians” and “powerful interests” – without calling them out specifically, by name. Now, I do realize that there’s only so much you can do in a 30-second ad, but I’d definitely use specific language, not just “politicians” or “interests” or whatever. I’d also say Trump’s name, call the Republican candidate – in this case John McGuire – a puppet of his corrupt, insane leader (Trump), etc. Anyway…I hope this ad (and other ads; hopefully Tom Perriello has the resources to be on the air from now until election day) works for the VA05 electorate…we’ll see.
P.S. Also, one job hasn’t “paid the bills” since the 1950s, maybe into the 1960s…but definitely not since the 1970s. And there’s no way we’re going back to the 1950s.
P.P.S. If you want to see a *GREAT* ad along these same lines, check out this ad by Tom Perriello in his winning 2008 run for U.S. House against Virgil Goode! So good. Also, this 2008 Perriello for Congress ad is a classic!
NEW AD: TOM PERRIELLO LAUNCHES FIRST TV AD, TARGETS CORRUPTION AND RISING COST OF MCGUIRE
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — Today, Tom Perriello’s Congressional campaign launched the first TV ad of the general election for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District. The ad, entitled “Wall of Corruption,” visualizes how corruption has placed insurmountable barriers between working families and their path to the American dream.
“Voters are sick and tired of being stuck paying the price for the corruption and chaos in Congress,” said Perriello. “Politicians like John McGuire take the dark money donations and sell us out brick by brick, but that ends now. I promise to bring down costs and break down the wall of corruption blocking families around here from their shot at the American dream.”
“Wall of Corruption” will air in local media markets and on streaming services. In the ad, Perriello smashes through the bricks of corruption representing powerful interests groups, such as Big Tech, Big Pharma, insurance companies, and Dominion Energy.
Rep. John McGuire has taken over $187,000 in political contributions from corporations and corporate lobbyists. The ad airs as Rep. John McGuire scrambles to address accusations of trading on insider information, based on the public disclosures released by his office. Unlike McGuire, Perriello has always refused donations from lobbyists and corporate PACs. He has pledged to not hold or trade individual stocks during his time in Congress and to support banning such trades by members of Congress. He also supports banning dark money donations in politics, and he has been endorsed by leading anti-corruption organizations, including End Citizens United.
