MCLEAN, VA – Terry McAuliffe today released his 20th plan of the campaign, Virginia is for Vaccine Lovers: Keeping Virginians Safe, Schools Open, and Our Economy Strong Through COVID-19 Safety and Vaccines, outlining his vision to defeat the COVID-19 pandemic and build a stronger economy. The centerpiece of his plan is getting every eligible Virginian vaccinated and keeping Virginia’s schools and economy open through his “Virginia is for Vaccine Lovers” campaign. The campaign will deploy public health workers to regions with low vaccination rates, ensure Virginians have critical information about vaccine safety and utilize mobile vaccine clinics to make it easier for Virginians to get vaccinated.

As Virginia’s next governor, Terry will continue to lead on COVID-19 by following the science and guidance of experts and getting every eligible Virginian vaccinated. As governor, Terry will continue to urge every school division to require vaccines for all school personnel and work to ensure that health systems and nursing homes are following federal vaccine mandates. He will also create incentives for businesses that mandate vaccines for employees, which will allow them to do things like offer retention bonuses for staff, make paid leave available, and more. In order to improve worker and consumer confidence and drive Virginians safely back into businesses, Terry will launch a voluntary COVID-safety compliance certification and marketing campaign that businesses can participate in to demonstrate their commitment to safety. Terry will also leverage federal funds to expand access to affordable child care and before and after school programs so parents can stay in the workforce and educators can address learning loss for students.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is the most pressing economic issue facing our Commonwealth, and we must do everything in our power to keep students safely in schools and our economy strong. That starts with getting every eligible Virginian vaccinated,” said Terry McAuliffe. “As Virginia’s next governor, I will work every single day to rebuild a stronger economy that lifts up every Virginian. We will create good paying jobs and Virginia will lead the nation in our recovery from this pandemic.”

As Virginia’s 72nd Governor, Terry demonstrated his ability to lead the Commonwealth through an economic crisis. Despite inheriting a massive budget deficit and facing the ongoing effects of the Great Recession and sequestration, Terry made economic development and job creation a priority. During his term, he created 200,000 good-paying jobs, announced over 1,000 economic development deals, grew personal income by 14%, and lowered unemployment in every single city and county, including by nearly 50% in most rural counties. Terry also made major investments in public health, and by the end of his term Virginia was one of the top three states in the nation for preparedness for future health emergencies.

While Terry has demonstrated his ability to rebuild Virginia’s economy after a crisis and has consistently been a leader on COVID-19 safety, Glenn Youngkin continues to support reckless policies that put Virginians’ health and the economy at risk. In addition to opposing mask and vaccine mandates, Glenn continues to encourage students to take non-medical and non-religious exemptions to avoid getting vaccinated. He said that he would model his governorship after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s failed leadership, and he’s even called bills to withhold funding for schools shut down due to high COVID-19 infection rates “the greatest thing that I’ve seen.”

Terry has released 20 detailed plans to strengthen Virginia’s education system and dramatically increase teacher pay, help secure Virginia’s economic recovery from COVID-19, reform our criminal justice system, ensure Virginians have access to regular nutritious meals, address the broken, predatory system of prescription drug pricing, confront the gun violence epidemic, make Virginia the best state in the nation for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Health Care (STEM-H) and computer science education, tackle the housing crisis in the Commonwealth and invest in Virginia’s workforce in the post-COVID economy, ensure Virginians have access to high-quality, affordable health care, tackle climate change and secure Virginia’s clean energy future by 2035, lift up Black Virginians as the Commonwealth rebuilds from the COVID-19 pandemic, further advance LGBTQ+ rights, create a flourishing rural economy, support entrepreneurial ecosystems and tackle rising costs and meet the health care needs, make higher education more affordable, boost Virginia’s agriculture and forestry industries, and protect seniors from COVID-19 and ensure quality and affordability later in life.
