It’s going to be a very, very long four years in Virginia with a right wingnut like Jason Miyares as our Attorney General. Needless to say, it was a huge, huge mistake to elect him (although he only won by a slim 26k votes out of 3.3 million cast), and now we’re all going to pay the price for it, sad to say. See below for responses to Miyares’ ridiculous op-ed in today’s Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press, which there’s no point even linking to (you can find it if you really want to do so).
- Fairfax Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano tweets: “@JasonMiyaresVA gave a master class on how to show your ass. He again proves he doesn’t understand the drivers of crime or the effects of the discredited policies he wants to implement. And as always, he’s willing to use victims as political props in the most disgusting way…[Miyares] won’t acknowledge that no one elected him to supplant their elected local prosecutor, certainly not in a place where he pulled 30% (Fairfax!). His hope to do so ignores the will of voters who rejected him, regardless of the tortured logic he uses to defend it. Lastly, @fatehinorfolk —still nothing from @JasonMiyaresVA about helping victims by pushing to fund Virginia’s Witness Protection Program, right? Shocker. I look forward to 4 years of Miyares yelling about victims in the papers but not knowing how to actually move the needle.”
- Fredericksburg Commonwealth’s Attorney Libby Humphries tweets: “It’s a shell game to co-opt victims to advocate for the approach that values incarceration to the exclusion of all else as the only meaningful expression of justice.”
- VA Scope reporter Brandon Jarvis tweets: “As I lay here trying to find a Covid test anywhere in the state of Virginia, I wonder if Republicans are focused on the right thing. Miyares seems to only care about talking shit to NOVA CA’s.”
