Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi Announces Launch of Literature & Government Lecture Series Tour Across Virginia

“L&G with the LG” Will Engage Students and Faculty in Virginia Colleges and Universities, HBCUs, and Community Colleges

RICHMOND, VA — Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi today announced the launch of Literature & Government, a four-year lecture series beginning this spring that will take her to colleges and universities across Virginia, including public and private institutions, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), and community colleges:

“Over the next four years, I look forward to bringing students, faculty, and community members together across the Commonwealth to participate in engaging conversations at the intersection of literature, public life, and civic responsibility. I spent 30 years as a professor in Richmond, and I have long believed that literature helps us better understand the historical and cultural forces that shape our government and communities. Through this series, I hope to foster thoughtful dialogue about how the stories we tell influence public discourse, inform policy, and strengthen our democracy. Our country is experiencing a time of deep uncertainty and division; my hope is that this tour becomes a space for much-needed community conversations and connection.

“Returning to campuses across Virginia through this lecture series is deeply meaningful to me, as the classroom has always been where I have seen ideas come to life and broader awareness take shape. Literature invites us to grapple with who we are, how we understand one another, and how we participate in shaping our shared future. Encouraging these conversations, especially with students and educators, matters now more than ever, and I am honored to continue this work in a new way across Virginia’s campuses.”
