If you haven’t been paying attention to the Virginia House of Delegates racial gerrymandering case (“Bethune-Hill vs. Virginia State Board of Elections”), you really might want to do so. Why? Because, as the VPAP graphic indicates, not only could this force significant changes in the 11 House of Delegates districts directly impacted by the court ruling yesterday – HDs 63 (Del. Lashrecse Aird), 69 (Del. Betsy Carr), 70 (Del. Delores McQuinn), 71 (Del. Jeff Bourne), 74 (Del. Lamont Bagby), 77 (Del. Cliff Hayes), 80 (Del. Matthew James), 89 (Del. Jay Jones), 90 (Del. Joe Lindsey), 92 (Del. Jeion Ward), and 95 (Del. Cia Price) – but also “the racial mix in many of 22 adjoining districts ahead of 2019 elections.” Combined, that’s 33 Virginia House of Delegates districts, or one third of the total in the entire chamber, covering most of the Richmond area and southeastern Virginia. Could be wild…and also could lead to Democratic gains of several House seats (note: the House of Delegates is currently divided 51R-49D, so this is a BFD).
