While the Trump administration and its hand-picked Supreme Court pursue “a harshly anti-immigrant agenda” and their moronic wall, Sen. Tim Kaine visits the border (see his comments and photos, below) and urges us not to “lose sight of our values.” Instead, Kaine says correctly: “We need to tackle the root causes that are forcing families from Central America to seek refuge in the U.S. and ensure that families are treated humanely once they’re in the United States’ care. Personally, having studied Spanish and traveled extensively in one of those poor Central American countries (Guatemala), it’s crystal clear that Kaine is right and Trump is wrong. And yes, we’d be a million times better off right now if Tim Kaine were vice president to President Hillary Clinton, instead of the Trump/Pence dystopia we’re currently suffering through.
Senator Mazie K. Hirono and I heard heartbreaking stories from migrant families at the U.S.-Mexico border today. We talked with parents who took their children thousands of miles on a dangerous journey to the U.S. – fleeing drugs and violence in their home countries that made them fear for their children’s lives. The Trump Administration has pursued a harshly anti-immigrant agenda that targets families like theirs, along with people with student visas and immigrants with permanent residency. They have separated families, made it hard to apply for asylum, and used words of hatred. They want everyone to believe this great nation of immigrants is now something else.
We can’t lose sight of our values. We need to tackle the root causes that are forcing many families from Central America to seek refuge in the U.S. and ensure that families are treated humanely once they’re in the United States’ care.
