See below for a letter from 33 Virginia organizations, “representing over 335,000 people,“ to Attorney General Mark Herring regarding the Mountain Valley Pipeline, requesting that he
- “[Sue] the Trump administration for rolling back the protections Congress passed in the Endangered Species Act.
- “[Provide] guidance to the State Water Control Board to add the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) update to their September 24 meeting agenda. The board needs to address MVP’s pollution of Virginia waterways that provide habitat for endangered fish. It is the board’s responsibility to enforce the Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act regulations.”
I couldn’t agree more. In general, this pipeline is a terrible idea, both for environmental and economic reasons. The fact is, given the escalating climate crisis, at this point there is absolutely no justification for building any new fossil fuel infrastructure, including for fracked gas, which emits the potent greenhouse gas methane in its production process and also the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide when it is burned to produce power.
