Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Tuesday, August 2.

  • Governor McAuliffe Announces Solar Project to Power Government Operations with Renewable Energy

~ The Commonwealth is partnering with Dominion and the Department of the Navy to build solar project at Naval Air Station Oceana ~

VIRGINIA BEACH – Governor McAuliffe announced today the first solar project to power state operations with carbon-free, renewable energy. At an event at Naval Air Station Oceana celebrating the Navy’s work on solar energy development, the Governor stated that the Commonwealth will purchase 100% of the energy generated from an 18 megawatt solar facility built by Dominion Virginia Power inside Oceana.

Speaking at today’s announcement, Governor McAuliffe said, “This historic announcement is the latest step forward in our mission to make Virginia a global leader in the renewable energy economy. I want to thank the Department of the Navy and Dominion for joining us in this partnership to diversify Virginia’s energy mix and enhance the security of our energy infrastructure. Solar energy is an essential element of the all-of-the-above energy approach our Commonwealth needs to keep costs for businesses, families and taxpayers low and continue to build a new Virginia economy.”

Dominion will build, own and operate the solar facility located within the fence line of Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach. In addition to purchasing the power, the Commonwealth will retain and retire Renewable Energy Certificates that will be used to satisfy a portion of the state renewable procurement goal. The solar facility is expected to begin service in late 2017.

“The clean energy industry represents a major economic development opportunity for the Commonwealth, and we must embrace the potential of this growth industry,” said Secretary of Commerce and Trade Maurice Jones. “This project satisfies over 16% of the Governor’s procurement goal and sends a signal to the clean energy market that Virginia is a welcoming place for renewable energy developers, both large and small.”

“Not only did we meet the one GW goal ashore five years early, we surpassed it — reaching 1.1 GW by the end of last year. In doing so we’ve achieved $90 million in nominal energy cost savings, $62 million in energy security hardware upgrades to bases, 170 megawatts of access to power during outages and 22 million tons of CO2 abated. And we are just getting started,” said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus. “Today, the State of Virginia, the Hampton Roads community, Dominion Virginia Power and our Navy and Marine Corps are joining together to add to our success, to protect the future of NS Norfolk and NAS Oceana, and to enhance national security for the American people.”

“Solar is an integral part of Dominion’s commitment to renewable energy,” said Tom Farrell, CEO of Dominion Resources. “The Oceana solar facility, along with four other large solar facilities we have announced in Virginia, will bring clean energy to the state, new jobs and other economic benefits. Partnerships like the ones highlighted today with the Department of Navy and the Commonwealth help to make our state a more attractive place to live, work and do business. We are very proud of what we have collectively accomplished today.”

In December 2014, the Governor announced that the state will procure up to 8% of its electricity consumption from renewable resources within three years. This goal represents approximately 110 megawatts of installed renewable capacity.

In addition to this announcement, the Department of Navy is celebrating agreements with Dominion Virginia Power that will increase the use of renewable energy to power operations at Naval Station Norfolk.

  • Video: Obama correctly states that Trump is “unfit to serve as president” (or, I’d add, anything else)

  • Personally, I’m shocked! shocked! that the woman who sponsored mandatory transvaginal ultrasounds would demagogue on transgender issue as well. And yeah, this loon is a leading contender – on the Republican side, of course – for Virginia LG next year.

  • Craaaaazy Virginia State Sen. Dick Black:

With less than 24 hours notice, thousands of people attended the Trump rally in Leesburg. School Board Member Joy Maloney (D) was hauled away by the police for blocking voters access to hear a political speech and become more informed about the upcoming election. The crowd cheered as she was dragged to the police car because she refused to walk. Shocking abuse of her elected position.

  • Video: Joe Scarborough says Republicans talking privately about Trump’s mental health, “what is wrong with him?” Says Trump has changed for the worse, “even over the past month.”

    • Quizzical

I was watching this video and realized that it could be used, unedited, as a campaign ad against Trump. I almost started to feel sorry for Trump, but then I remembered how Dukakis and Gore and Kerry were treated during their campaigns, and how Obama was treated after his election and during the run-up to the 2010 elections.

*Excerpts* Virginia Veterans Denounce Trump for Insulting Virginia Gold Star Family .

On Tuesday, Virginia Veterans held a press conference outside of Donald Trump’s Loudoun rally to denounce Trump’s divisive attacks on prisoners of war and a Virginia gold star family. Last week, Mr. Khizr Khan, the father of a Muslim American war hero from Charlottesville, gave a moving speech at the Democratic National Convention. He also called out Donald Trump’s offensive and divisive religious discrimination that would have prevented their son – an Army captain who gave his life to save other soldiers in his unit – from even entering the United States of America. “You have sacrificed nothing,” Khan told Trump.

Additionally, Donald Trump today doubled down on his ignorance and lack of respect for veterans when receiving a copy of a purple heart, saying “I always wanted to get the Purple Heart. This was much easier.”

Speakers include Sue Hoppin, Founder and President of the National Military Spouse Network, Kevin Green, Former Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, and Terron Sims, U.S. Army Veteran.

Please find key excerpts from the press conference below:

    Terron Sims, U.S. Army Veteran:

“CPT Humayun Khan and I were in Iraq at the same time, and though I did not have the honor of knowing him, I personally know of the sacrifices he and his family have made for our country. Donald Trump using his sacrifice and his father’s speech to belittle them both for political gain is unacceptable. I join veterans across the country, republicans, independents, and democrats, in rejecting Donald Trump’s pattern of disrespect towards those who have served our nation in uniform.

“Trump continuously calls our military “a disaster” and has insulted prisoners of war, like Senator John McCain, by saying that he prefers people who weren’t captured. Trump’s reckless rhetoric and lack of policy expertise hurts veterans and our military and, worst of all, makes America less safe. His reckless rhetoric is tearing our nation apart and recalls us back to the uglier parts of our history, when fear and ignorance ruled. ”

Sue Hoppin, Founder and President of the National Military Spouse Network:

“Rather than commend Mr. Khan and his family for their sacrifice and thank them for their patriotism, Trump belittled them in interviews and on Twitter. Suggesting that Mr. Khan has someone else write his speech for him and playing on stereotypes of Muslims by insinuating that Ghazala Khan wasn’t allowed to speak – when in fact she was just too grief stricken to speak. This behavior cannot stand. Divisive and shameful comments from someone who is trying to become Commander in Chief of this country should be swiftly denounced by leaders on both sides of the aisle, and by the American public.”

Kevin Green, Vice Admiral, U.S. Navy (retired), Former Deputy Chief of Naval Operations:

“Attacking gold star parents, Khizr and Ghazala Khan, who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country is an absolute slap in the face to every veteran, servicemember, and frankly every American who respects our uniformed men and women. That’s not a leader. That’s a petulant child. Donald Trump is unfit to lead our military and unfit to lead out country. Period.”
