Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Sunday, March 27.
- Donald Trump’s Giant Convention Con (“Donald Trump is likely on the verge of losing the Republican primary, falling short of the number of delegates required to win the presidential nomination. But, as bullies are wont to do, Trump is now trying desperately to change the rules—to argue that the nomination should go not to the candidate who wins 1,237 delegates but to whoever comes closest.”)
- Syrian Troops Drive IS Out of Historic Palmyra
- Sanders sweeps Democratic caucuses in trio of Western states (“The victories in Washington, Alaska and Hawaii buoyed the independent senator’s insurgent challenge, but did not put much of a dent in Hillary Clinton’s delegate lead.”)
- Trump refuses to rule out war with China: ‘We need unpredictability’ (The guy’s completely reckless and irresponsible, among a multitude of other flaws. Utterly unsuitable to president, that’s for sure.)
- STUDY: National TV News Shows Fail To Report On Unprecedented Anti-LGBT Legislation (“TV news,” with a few exceptions, is a laughable oxymoron.)
- North Carolina’s rush to bigotry (The lesson: elect Republicans, ruin your state.)
- Schapiro: Kaine helps Clinton by sitting tight in Senate (“Kaine is a good match for Clinton because he’s from a swing state. He’s tight with Hispanics, the second fastest-growing minority in the country behind Asians. Kaine campaigns as easily in Spanish as he does in English. He’s a Catholic. That gives him another in with Hispanics — and one with ethnic, working-class whites, particularly in the industrial Midwest, where Kaine was born and raised. As the first Southern governor to endorse Obama, Kaine also is a direct link to the departing president.”)
- Governor vetoes bill to add city voters to Howell’s district
- Special prosecutor appointed in dispute involving slain journalist’s father (“Bad blood continues to flow between Andy Parker and state Sen. Bill Stanley, a quarrel that began after Alison Parker was gunned down.”)
- Lornel G. Tompkins: Protect Virginians’ health with climate action
- Editorial: Democrat takes on difficult task (“Give Eileen Bedell credit. She believes voters deserve a discussion and she personally is willing to participate in one.”)
- Editorial: Health care market is anything but free (“There’s plenty of evidence in that historical record that, left to their own devices, medical companies — like other businesses — will seek first to maximize profits. Knee replacements, for example, are more profitable than indigent cancer care.”)
- Former chief deputy attorney general and a businessman consider run for Virginia Beach mayor (All voters need to know: “she served as the chief deputy under former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli”)
- Chesterfield Power Station expected to burn coal for the foreseeable future (Completely unacceptable.)
- Forbes isn’t the only out-of-district congressional candidate in Hampton Roads (“Henrico County Sheriff Michael Wade and state Sen. Don McEachin, who announced their candidacies in recent weeks, point out that while their homes are in another congressional district represented by Rep. David Brat, they have close personal ties to the 4th.”)
- Fairfax supervisors lose free pass to county pools, golf courses and carousels
- Gun store opens in Arlington County to strong support and business (Example #gazillion why gun violence prevention folks lose: the pro-gun people are by far more passionate, plus they spend their money…)
- Cloudy and cooler today, increasing chance of showers tonight
