Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Tuesday, August 15. By the way, the cover photo is by Boyd Walker of “a candlelight Quaker vigil in front of Richard Spencer’s National Policy Institute [in Alexandria last night] [in which] he came out to talk to us with a bunch of his fascist buddies.” I’ll post the video of that in the comments section. It’s pathetic as you’d expect.
- Trump’s Weak Charlottersville Response Gets Worse (“He attacked the media and a CEO for hounding him, then made a birther jab.”)
- Trump likes to memorialize murder victims, but he didn’t for the victim of a white nationalist
- Trump eliminated funding for group countering white radicalization prior to Charlottesville (“Warnings that white supremacist groups are a real and present threat have gone ignored by the White House” We’ll know Trump is serious when he puts the full weight of the federal government behind fighting this domestic terrorism.)
- Fox News host delivers speech arguing America isn’t racist—seconds later, he proves himself wrong (This is hilarious in a dark,
warped, Fox-ian way.) - From “All Lives Matter” to the terror in Charlottesville: How the media’s phony fairness got us here (“Too many journalists were complicit in the rise of Trump and refuse to call the terror in Virginia by its name”)
- Donald Trump and the Lost Cause: President finally disavows racist violence — but he applauded the movement behind Unite the Right (“With his demand to ‘cherish our history,’ Trump sided with the pro-Confederate cause that sparked the violence”)
- How Mr. Trump Could Face Up to White Supremacists (“Responding to Charlottesville and saying ‘racism is evil’ is only a start.”)
- Trump yields to pressure, calls neo-Nazis and KKK criminals (What a guy, huh?)
- Trump tries to quell outrage over Va. remarks, denounces white supremacists (Way too late, and also far too little, as what Trump needs to do is take ACTION, starting with firing all the white supremacists/white “nationalists” in his administration. Only then will we know he’s somewhat serious.)
- ‘Alt-Right’ Leaders Won’t Condemn Ramming Suspect
- Energized Far Right Plots Its Next Moves (And why are they “energized?” Simple: Trump. Anyone who voted for Trump, by the way, is responsible for this crap.)
- Intel CEO exits President Trump’s manufacturing council
- Trump’s America is not mine (“The president has put my relationship with my own country on the rocks. Some days I think I don’t know it anymore.”)
- Trump’s response to Charlottesville should surprise no one
- Executive resigns from president’s council following Trump’s Charlottesville response (Good; now every other executive should do the same.)
- Is America Headed for a New Kind of Civil War?
- 5 things to watch in Alabama’s special election (“Incumbent GOP Sen. Luther Strange and Rep. Mo Brooks are in a close race for the second spot in a runoff.”)
- Trump plays both sides with Charlottesville response (“His delayed rebuke of white supremacists is seen as a way to placate the alt-right — and then douse the ensuing media storm.” And hint at pardoning the vicious racist Joe Arpaio.)
- “As I Have Said Many Times Before” (“In his Charlottesville do-over, Trump insists he got it right the first time.”)
- Why are people still racist? What science says about America’s race problem.
- “Run Them Down” (“Driving into crowds of protesters was a right-wing fantasy long before the violence in Charlottesville.”)
- The Guns Won (“Charlottesville showed that our First Amendment jurisprudence hasn’t reckoned with our Second Amendment reality.”)
- The backstory on Trump’s Charlottesville do-over (There shouldn’t have to be a “do-over” or a “backstory.”)
- Turmoil in Virginia touches a nerve across the country
- Trump attacks ‘fake news media’ over coverage of Charlottesville remarks (Such a whiner.)
- Trump retweets prominent alt-right conspiracy theorist after sluggish disavowal of Charlottesville attack
- Alex Jones: A lot of KKK protesters are “Jewish actors” who look like the “cast of Seinfeld” with their hoods off (This raving lunatic’s a buddy of Trump’s.)
- Immigration battlefield widens for Trump, GOP
- Right-wing media provided home for white supremacist before he organized Charlottesville rally (“Daily Caller has now removed Jason Kessler’s work from its site”)
- Here are all the things Fox News covered to avoid talking about the Charlottesville attack
- The Republican Running For Governor in Virginia is a Big Fan of Keeping Confederate Monuments (“Ed Gillespie hasn’t said whether he still believes Charlottesville’s Robert E. Lee sculpture should stay where it is.”)
- Virginia Is a Multicultural Success Story (“Here’s the picture of a state welcoming to immigrants that the alt-right doesn’t want you to see.”)
- Blue Ridge Caucus: Mark Warner calls members of Alt-Right ‘domestic terrorists’ after Charlottesville rally
- Editorial: Facing up to hatred (“TEMPTING THOUGH it may be, do not look away from the awful tragedy that unfolded in Charlottesville over the weekend. Do not dismiss it or attempt to minimize its importance.”)
- Former Va. attorney general Cuccinelli catches flak for telling Symone Sanders to ‘shut up’ on CNN
- Editorial: Boucher’s advice for Democrats (“Boucher says if a Democrat is ‘right’ on guns in the eyes of rural voters, then he or she has leeway to take more conventional liberal stands on other issues. That’s how Democrats can win more seats, Boucher says. So here’s the real question: Are Democrats willing to accept that?”)
- Virginia officials defend handling of violent Charlottesville rally and counterprotest
- Meticulous torchlight rally spawned a day of rage, chaos and death in Charlottesville
- Recounting a day of rage, hate, violence and death (“How a rally of white nationalists and supremacists at the University of Virginia turned into a ‘tragic, tragic weekend.'”)
