Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Tuesday, May 29. Also, check out the video of Rudy Giuliani – a true villain – getting loudly booed at Yankees Stadium as the announcer wishes him a happy birthday. Richly deserved.
- North Korea summit: diplomatic flurry as Kim aides head to Singapore and US (“US also sends ‘pre-advance’ team to Singapore, while Japan’s Shinzo Abe and Donald Trump decide to meet before ‘expected’ summit”)
- Italy’s Political Risks Infect Global Markets
- Deepening Italian crisis batters European markets
- With ‘Spygate,’ Trump Uses a Conspiracy to Erode Trust (“It was the latest indication that a president who has long trafficked in conspiracy theories has brought them from the fringes of public discourse to the White House.”)
- Did the Trump Administration Separate Immigrant Children From Parents and Lose Them? (“If a mother or father is with a child when apprehended for the crime of illegal entry, the minor must be taken from the parent. Hundreds of immigrant children have already been separated from their parents at the border since October, and the new policy will result in a steep increase.”)
- Republicans’ inhumanity at the border reveals their grand scam (“Does the GOP now stand for separating parents and children?” It’s not a question, it’s clearly the case.)
- As Trump separates migrant families and 1,500 kids are missing, three Sunday shows ignored immigration entirely (I used to watch these shows religiously. For several years now, though, I never watch any of them, except in short YouTube clips or whatever if someone actually says something interesting.)
- Trump exposes the hypocrisy of Christian Republicans (“His dehumanization of immigrants exposes the massive failure of Christian political leadership.” These people either haven’t read the Gospels or simply don’t care what’s in them, because they’re violating basically everything.)
- With new West Wing cast, Trump calls the shots and aides follow (“Largely gone are the warring factions that dominated life at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in the first year of President Trump’s term, replaced by solo players — many with personal connections to the president and their own miniature fiefdoms — laboring to do their jobs and survive.”)
- The Measure of Trump’s Devotion (“On Memorial Day, as the nation turned to the president to lead its shared rituals of unity and common purpose, he revealed himself unequal to the office he holds.”)
- Little Scalia (“Watching Neil Gorsuch, a mild-mannered good boy from Denver, become the second-most-polarizing man in Washington.”)
- Trump’s approach to national, economic security is leaving his allies baffled
- Michelle Wolf destroys the NFL for blaming sinking ratings on anthem protests: ‘Like making sure JFK was wearing his seatbelt’
- Millennials take on Trump in the midterms (“Younger candidates are flooding Democratic congressional primaries — and winning.”)
- Trump uses discrediting skills on Mueller
- Trump’s Right-Hand Troll (“Stephen Miller once tormented liberals at Duke. Now the president’s speechwriter and immigration enforcer is deploying the art of provocation from the White House.”)
- Yankees crowd loudly boos Giuliani on his birthday
- Ross tries to reclaim ‘killer’ status with Trump in China trade talks (“The commerce secretary has been increasingly marginalized in the administration in recent months amid jockeying over protectionism.”)
- The Mueller Investigation’s Known Unknowns (“Reading the tea leaves after a confusing week.”)
- They Did Not Die for What We Have Now—and That’s On Us, Not Them (“Ultimately, that’s why we’ve lost the plot on Memorial Day.”)
- Editorial: Stifling dissent on the football field (Interesting, the RTD editorial board’s libertarian streak comes out…and I strongly agree with them. In short, it looks like right wingers want the NFL to be a “politically correct” “safe space” for themselves.)
- Saxman: Virginia Needs Medicaid Expansion (“Saxman is a Republican who represented Staunton and parts of Augusta, Rockingham, and Highland counties in the House of Delegates from 2002-2010. Since 2014, he has served as executive director of the Virginia Foundation for Research and Economic Education”)
- Virginia lawmakers return to finalize budget, Medicaid (“The state Senate is set to meet Tuesday at the Capitol.” Get the damn job DONE already!)
- On Third Thought, Representative Tom Garrett Retires, Citing Alcoholism
- Rep. Thomas Garrett (R-Va.) announces he is an alcoholic and will not seek reelection
- Judge to tree-sitters opposing Mountain Valley Pipeline: This is ‘not a game’ (No, it isn’t. Neither is what the Mountain Valley Pipeline people are doing.)
- Wexton, Helmer start airing TV ads in Democratic primary
- Denver Riggleman enters race to replace Rep. Tom Garrett
- UPDATE: Riggleman’s In–Who will replace Tom Garrett in the 5th? Will Martha Boneta be the first to declare her candidacy?
- CASEY: Billboard company rejections won’t stop anti-Ted Nugent messaging campaign (“Three billboard companies have refused to take gun-control activist Andy Parker’s money for an ad campaign against gun-nut rocker Ted Nugent, who appears at the Berglund Center in July. But that’s not going to stop Parker.”)
- Tough task to tackle (“Newport News has a new police chief, and his job involves making a connection with the community”)
- Swimmer apparently drowns during competition in Northern Virginia (“Police said Kevin Ruby, 45, was competing in a race at Lake Audubon, but a family member had not heard from him and became concerned. Ruby lived in the city of Falls Church, according to authorities.”)
- Witnesses: No one noticed two drowning victims until they were discovered in Chesterfield pool’s deep end
- The Nationals are getting the best of the Orioles in a rivalry that didn’t have to be bitter (I was a huge Orioles fan for many years, but yeah, Peter Angelos totally f’ed it up.)
- Golden Knights surge back against Capitals to win series opener
- Cloudy and humid with a chance of showers that builds through tomorrow
