Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Monday, October 1.
- Canada-US reach free trade deal with Mexico (“The agreement reached Sunday gives U.S. farmers greater access to the Canadian dairy market. But it keeps a NAFTA dispute-resolution process that the U.S. wanted to jettison and offers Canada protection if Trump goes ahead with plans to impose tariffs on cars, trucks and auto parts imported into the United States.”)
- This Map Shows Why Trump Couldn’t Kill Nafta (Yep, that’s why Trump caved – politics.)
- Globalists Will Love Trump’s New Nafta Deal (“Despite the fanfare, the agreement doesn’t change much… As with the revised U.S.-South Korea deal announced last week, the achievement is declared to be historic while the changes made are cosmetic.”)
- Netanyahu At Odds With Trump Over Two-State Solution
- Democrats Denounce Limits on F.B.I.’s Kavanaugh Inquiry as a ‘Farce’
- The Confusion Surrounding the F.B.I.’s Renewed Investigation of Brett Kavanaugh (“Some who say that they have information relevant to the F.B.I.’s investigation of Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, are suspicious that the investigation will amount to a ‘whitewash.'”)
- Sarah Sanders won’t say the White House isn’t interfering in FBI investigation of Brett Kavanaugh (“That’s a question you’d have to ask the Senate.”)
- FBI’s Kavanaugh Investigation May Be Designed to Fail (“Who controls it?”)
- Victimizing the Victims, Again (“In the Kavanaugh hearings, Republicans made it clear that the old, male-dominated order will prevail.”)
- Comey: Kavanaugh’s “Obvious Lies” About Yearbook Are “Flashing Signal to Dig Deeper”
- James Comey: The F.B.I. Can Do This (“Despite limitations and partisan attacks, the bureau can find out a lot about the Kavanaugh accusations in a week.”)
- Yale Classmate Accuses Kavanaugh of “Blatant Mischaracterization” of Drinking Habits
- Feminists won’t back down: What’s next for #MeToo after the Kavanaugh vote? (“Feminists are angry, and watching Kavanaugh sail out of committee on a party-line vote only motivates them more”)
- Lindsey Graham Wants To Investigate Democrats for Kavanaugh Leak (Lindsey Graham is completely unhinged.)
- Don’t be fooled: Working Americans are worse off under Trump (“The data represent a blow to the White House’s preferred economic narrative.”)

- Juan Williams: Trump is tearing the racial fabric
- Sanders defends lack of White House press briefings
- Trump Said What About Kim Jong-un? (“With his remark about how he ‘fell in love’ with the dictator, the president has sunk to an absurd new low.”)
- Democrats would view Rosenstein ouster as an election ‘gift’ (“Democratic Party sources and strategists say they know that if Trump fires Rosenstein, he will ignite a firestorm of accusations that the president is attempting to shut down the investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 election he won.”)
- Kellyanne Conway Says She Was a Victim of Sexual Assault
- John Oliver Exposes Brett Kavanaugh’s ‘Horrifying’ Testimony (“The ‘Last Week Tonight’ host broke down the lies and half-truths buried in the Trump Supreme Court nominee’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.”)
- Women are running for office in historic numbers. Here are 10 female candidates to watch. (“Other standout names include: MJ Hegar, Texas-31; Gina Ortiz Jones, Texas- 23; Mikie Sherrill, NY-11; Elaine Luria, VA-02 and Abigail Spanberger, VA-07.”)
- Virginia Rep. Barbara Comstock says Senate Democrats have abused confirmation process (Yep, that’s Barbara Comstock, right-wing hack through and through.)
- A ‘relative moderate’ in Virginia GOP? Relative to what? (“Comstock’s extremism doesn’t stop there. While in the Virginia House of Delegates, she voted in favor of a bill that would have required women to have a transvaginal ultrasound before receiving an abortion. She sits near the top of the list of recipients of National Rifle Association largesse and has opposed even basic common-sense gun regulation.”)
- Northam forms advisory commission on opioids
- Gerrymandering Isn’t the Reason Why There Are More Republican Districts (I’m not sure I’d go that far, but I totally agree that “clustering” – Dems “inefficiently distribut[ing] their voting power across the country” is a major factor in suboptimal Dem election performance. I’d also add disproportionate Democratic voter “dropoff” from presidential elections as a major culprit. So…no, nonpartisan redistricting isn’t a cure-all by any means, although it would probably help somewhat to make districts more competitive and “fair.”) –
