Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Friday, November 2. Virginia polls open in under 96 hours; also note that you can vote early/absentee through tomorrow (Saturday).
- As Midterm Vote Nears, Trump Reprises a Favorite Message: Fear Immigrants (Reminder: this is a nation of immigrants, in which basically every single one of us comes from or descends from people who immigrated…many not particularly “legally” either!)
- Trump must be held accountable for his troops-to-the-border stunt
- Trump May Finally Be Getting Too Racist for America (“His naked appeals to white identity politics may appeal to some of his supporters—it’s up to the rest of us to stand up against those appeals.”)
- The facts about Republicans’ hysteria over brown people (“Immigrants are much less likely to commit crimes than native-born U.S. citizens. Period.” Let’s repeat that: IMMIGRANTS ARE MUCH LESS LIKELY TO COMMIT CRIMES.)
- It’s Been 30 Years Since Willie Horton. We’re Supposed to Be Better Than That Now. (“Donald Trump is betting that we’re not.”)
- Trump’s immigration obsession could backfire, some Republicans fear (“Ignoring pleas for a closing focus on the economy, Trump embraces a fiery finale that has distressed vulnerable GOP candidates.”)
- As Trump fumed about immigration, some media outlets cut away (Why were they airing it in the first place???
- CNN aired Trump rambling about immigrants for 27 minutes (“In an echo of 2016, the president got to repeat falsehoods uninterrupted.”)
- Trump’s Racist ‘Willie Horton’ Video Is a Normal GOP Ad in 2018 (Yep, Corey Stewart’s ads are as racist or even more so.)
- Trump’s November Non-Surprise: Nativist Panic (Basically, unless you’re a nativist or white supremacist, you should be voting for the Democratic candidates up and down the ballot.)
- Trump’s Nationalism Is Breaking Point for Some Suburban Voters, Risking G.O.P. Coalition (Try “WHITE nationalism”)
- A Party Defined by Its Lies (“At this point, good people can’t be good Republicans.”)
- There Sure Is a Lot of Nazi Stuff Going On Out in America Right Now! (“This week in the laboratories of democracy, where the monster is scratching at the door.”)
- Trump administration decides to stop funding efforts to counter far-right extremism (More evidence that this is a white supremacist administration, or at least one that panders to/coddles white supremacists.)
- Mueller Smear Pushed by Pro-Trump Activists Falls Apart at Press Conference (“Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman struggled to explain even basic details of their allegations—like the spelling of the accuser’s name.”)
- Fly Unzipped, Jack Burkman and Jacob Wohl Make Laughable Smear Claims Against Mueller (“Today, after a disastrous press conference, during which Burkman’s pants fly was unzipped, The Gateway Pundit announced it had suspended Wohl as a contributor.” My god…)
- The caravan “invasion” and America’s epistemic crisis (“The far right’s xenophobic fantasies now involve the actual US military.”)
- Roger Stone Sold Himself to Trump’s Campaign as a WikiLeaks Pipeline. Was He?
- John Bolton just gave an “Axis of Evil” speech about Latin America (“The US will now go after a so-called ‘Troika of Tyranny’: Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.” Remember, Barbara Comstock is tight with Bolton. ‘Nuff said – vote Jennifer Wexton on Tuesday!)
- Mattis is walking the Trump tightrope. It’s agonizing to watch.
- Steve King twice promoted a white supremacist, anti-Semitic, Holocaust-denying website on Twitter
- WATCH: Steve King freaks out over question about being a white supremacist (“Facts don’t care about the Iowa Republican’s feelings.” Steve King is 100% absolutely a white supremacist and all-around evil scumbag.)
- Lou Dobbs laughs at Fox’s effort to restrain anti-Semitism on his show (Why is Dobbs still employed???)
- The Saruman Trap (“When power is corrupt, there is no way to escape its toxic influence.”)
- CNN’s Lemon doubles down: ‘Evidence is overwhelming’ that white men are ‘biggest terror threat’
- GOP infighting spills into public view
- Fox host: Oprah is going to get Stacey Abrams elected
- How the Google employee walkout could trigger major corporate reform (“The Google protesters are fighting for a corporate governance change that could have national reverberations”)
- Why thousands of Google employees are protesting across the world (“The Google walkouts reflect a deepening moral crisis within the company.”)
- Arizona’s Green Party candidate drops out of Senate race and endorses Kyrsten Sinema (Exactly what Kremlin tool Jill Stein should have done in 2016. But nooooo…)
- North Dakota’s Racist Voter ID Law Is Already Backfiring (“A last-ditch effort to block enforcement of a law aimed at Native Americans has failed in court. But the law has also triggered a backlash—and thousands have new credentials.”)
- Texas Senate race tightens: Democrat Beto O’Rourke trails Ted Cruz by 3 points in new Emerson poll (Go Beto!)
- Democrats Are Running Strong Campaigns In Kansas (Yes, Kansas) (“The state voted for Donald Trump by more than 20 percentage points in 2016. But Democrats are doing really well in the polls this year.”)
- Va., Md. senators press FBI on reversing plans to move headquarters
- Va. GOP official hinted that Project Veritas had a spy in Democrat’s campaign (Of course…)
- Sarah Sanders to appear for Republican Riggleman in Va.’s 5th district (That kind of says it all about far-right “Freedom Caucus” wannabe Denver Riggleman)
- Kaine and Cockburn rally Democrats in Charlottesville
- Wexton has edge over Rep. Comstock, with little ticket-splitting, poll finds
- Cockburn greets supporters in The Plains
- New WaPo/Schar School Poll: Jennifer Wexton 54%-Barbara Comstock 43%; Kaine +19 Points in VA-10
- In a Northern Va. swing district, will Trump be enough for Democrats to unseat Rep. Comstock?
- Opinion/Editorial: Riggleman has sound ideas for Congress (Hahahahahahaha. OK, this editorial board now ranks with the Republican Times-Disgrace as the most far right in Virginia.)
- GOP Congressman Rob Wittman faces spirited challenge from Democrat Vangie Williams
- Boyle and Shabazz column: Does Governor Northam care about environmental justice? (“The Northam administration has said a lot of the right things about environmental protection and environmental justice — but actions speak louder than words. Northam, Fairfax, Herring, and Strickler cannot say these things are important while they undermine the Advisory Council on Environmental Justice and ignore their legal authority to ensure the public interest comes before corporate profits.” Agreed, all three have failed badly in this regard.)
