The following video and photos are from last night in Portsmouth. For the record, I despise these statues and very much understand why African Americans in particular would want these symbols of white supremacy and Jim Crow down ASAP. Having said that, clearly it’s dangerous – and also illegal – to pull them down like this. I strongly encourage localities to take down their Confederate statues in a safe and methodical manner, as soon as possible. They really have no place in 2020 America…or in 2000 America or 1980 America or 1960 America or 1940 America or 1920 America or 1900 America, for that matter.
