AG Mark Herring was on CNN yesterday, where he said the following:

  • What happened on 1/6, “with domestic terrorists taking over the Capitol, was a national disgrace…also the culmination of a presidency marked by lies and violence. Words matter, and we’re seeing that in real time.”
  • We’re seeing potential threats in state capitols; “here in Virginia, we are taking this very very seriously…while we’re not seeing specific threats, we are taking it very seriously. And that is something that we have learned from that horrific ‘Unite the Right’ white supremacy rally in Charlottesville in August 2017…You can NOT overprepare, and you MUST take these threats from white supremacist extremists very seriously and we are.”
  • I have sounding the alarm for years…about the real threat that white supremacist extremists pose…to public safety…so we are taking it seriously, coordinating with local police, Capitol police, state police…state buildings around Capitol square have been boarded up…A year ago this time, we saw what seemed like a dress rehearsal in Richmond; on what is called Lobby Day, pro-gun groups showed up in order to protest reasonable gun safety…measures that the legislature was taking up…”
  • The politicians who continue to perpetuate the lies and fan the flames of these forces also need to be held accountable. A state senator from Virginia, who is a gubernatorial candidate, was at least some of the events that led to the insurrection on January 6 and addressed the crowd. And yesterday, on the floor of the Senate, she attempted to defend herself, saying she was honored to be there. Now how abhorrent is that, to say that you were honored to be somewhere where at least five people were killed and people were prancing around the U.S. Capitol with Confederate flags and wearing shirts that are anti-Semitic, and a common thread that seems to run through it all is white supremacy. And we have to take these threats seriously and we have to hold those elected officials who are fanning the flames, repeating the lies, accountable.”
