Video: Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA11), Other Speakers Explain Why It Is Absolutely CRUCIAL Congress Pass HR1, the “For the People Act”

See below for video, courtesy of Network NOVA, of the program earlier this week on the crucial importance of protecting our democracy by passing HR1, the “For The People Act” – “a transformational anti-corruption and clean elections reform package.”  All the speakers are excellent, including Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA11), who clearly explained why passing HR1 is priority #1.

• First, Rep. Connolly set the stage for why this bill is so important, by discussing the assault on our democracy by Trump and his minions on/before 1/6/21, as well as by Republicans in state legislatures across the country who are working day and night to make it much HARDER to vote.
• As Rep. Connolly explained, our democracy is a symbol for everyone in the world, yet it’s both resilient AND fragile.
• In response, we need to pass HR1, which Rep. Connolly said will be a “transformative bill” — “addresses redistricting, ethics, campaign financing; it talks about early registration; it sets a standard for early voting and regular voting and guarantees people the right to vote; protects those rights, expands those rights. We’re headed with this bill in the opposite direction of all those Republicans who’ve introduced 135 bills to go in the opposite direction.”
• Rep. Connolly added: “Passing H.R.1 doesn’t necessarily
  guarantee one party or the other is going to win elections, but it does guarantee that no party ever again is going to have the power to actually threaten free and fair election results. Our democracy is absolutely predicated on the ability of people to vote and that vote to be respected by all parties concerned. H.R.1 will create the architecture to strengthen that resolve to strengthen that commitment and to strengthen the results that voters cast it is critical for our democracy.”
